TLDR
This article reported Luria and Delbruck's breakthrough study in which they established that viruses do not induce mutations in bacteria, but that virus-resisting mutations are spontaneous.
Abstract
This article reported Luria and Delbruck's breakthrough study in which they established that viruses do not induce mutations in bacteria, but that virus-resisting mutations are spontaneous. Their "fluctuation test" theory demonstrated that bacteria were ideal subjects for genetic research.

Bacteriophage for Biocontrol of Foodborne Pathogens: Calculations and Considerations

TL;DR: This review will discuss issues on the basis of the available literature as well as providing an outlook on the potential of phages in future applications, regarding both immediate and long-term efficacy, consumer safety, and application methods.

Tumor heterogeneity: biological implications and therapeutic consequences

TL;DR: Cancer can be composed of multiple clonal subpopulations of cancer cells which differ among themselves in many properties, including karyotype, growth rate, ability to metastasize, immunological characteristics, production and expression of markers, and sensitivity to therapeutic modalities.

Functional cooperation of MutT, MutM and MutY proteins in preventing mutations caused by spontaneous oxidation of guanine nucleotide in Escherichia coli

TL;DR: From analyses of forward mutations induced in cells lacking 8-oxo-dGTPase (MutT protein), cooperative functions of these proteins in control of the spontaneous mutagenesis became evident and in mutator strains lacking MutT and/or MutM proteins,8-oxoguanine of DNA increased to a concentration expected from the increased rate of mutation.

Spontaneous point mutations that occur more often when advantageous than when neutral.

TL;DR: It is shown that point mutations in the trp operon reverted to trp+ more frequently under conditions of prolonged tryptophan deprivation when the reversions were advantageous, than in the presence of tryPTophan when the reversal were neutral, and a heuristic model for the molecular basis of such mutations is proposed.

Evidence for Clonal Outgrowth of Androgen-independent Prostate Cancer Cells from Androgen-dependent Tumors through a Two-Step Process

TL;DR: It is concluded that prostate cancers contain heterogeneous mixtures of cells that vary in their dependence on androgen for growth and survival and that treatment with antiandrogen therapy provides selective pressure and alters the relative frequency of these cells, thereby leading to outgrowths of androgen-independent cancers.

Inheritance of resistance of mice to enteric bacterial and neurotropic virus infections

TL;DR: A bacteria-resistant-virus-resistant line is being developed from a cross between bacteria-susceptible-v virus-resistant and bacteria- resistant- virus-sUSceptible lines, which proved uniformly susceptible to a strain of mouse passage rabies virus.
