TLDR
This article reported Luria and Delbruck's breakthrough study in which they established that viruses do not induce mutations in bacteria, but that virus-resisting mutations are spontaneous.
Abstract
This article reported Luria and Delbruck's breakthrough study in which they established that viruses do not induce mutations in bacteria, but that virus-resisting mutations are spontaneous. Their "fluctuation test" theory demonstrated that bacteria were ideal subjects for genetic research.

What is a quasispecies

TL;DR: The quasispecies concept has been shown to affect the pathway of evolution and has been studied on RNA viruses which have a particularly high mutation rate.
Journal ArticleDOI

The unexhausted potential of E. coli

TL;DR: Findings have shed light on aspects of its biology and ecology that pose far-reaching questions and illustrate how an appreciation of E. coli's natural history can expand its value as a model organism.

Philosophy of experimental biology

TL;DR: In this paper, the nature of explanations and reductionism are discussed and a discussion of the role of explanations in scientific inference is presented in the context of ontogeny and scientific realism in search of the truth.
Journal ArticleDOI

Coevolutionary arms races between bacteria and bacteriophage.

TL;DR: A computational and theoretical framework for analyzing rapid coevolutionary dynamics of bacteriophage and bacteria in their ecological context and finds that multiple quasispecies of bacteria and phage can coexist in a homogeneous medium with a single resource.
Journal ArticleDOI

Recombination in Adaptive Mutation

TL;DR: Results indicate that the molecular mechanism by which adaptive mutation occurs includes recombination, and no such association is seen for spontaneous mutation in growing cells.

Inheritance of resistance of mice to enteric bacterial and neurotropic virus infections

TL;DR: A bacteria-resistant-virus-resistant line is being developed from a cross between bacteria-susceptible-v virus-resistant and bacteria- resistant- virus-sUSceptible lines, which proved uniformly susceptible to a strain of mouse passage rabies virus.

A Description of Some Color Variants Produced by Serratia marcescens, Strain 274

TL;DR: The work reported in this paper is of a preliminary nature and is concerned with the selection of a strain suitable for intensive study, the development of a special medium, and the recognition and characterization of specific variant types.
