TLDR
A selective transition in the 2GSH/GSSG redox system is effected in intact liver cells by several organic hydroperoxides reported as active substrates for rat liver glutathione peroxidase.

Hydrogen peroxide as a central redox signaling molecule in physiological oxidative stress: Oxidative eustress.

TL;DR: The present overview focuses on recent progress on metabolic sources and sinks of H 2O2 and on the role of H2O2 in redox signaling under physiological conditions, denoted as oxidative eustress.

The Glutathione Status of Cells

TL;DR: GSH status, the biologically relevant chemistry of GSH, the forms in which GSH can be present within the cell, along with the GSH content of cells and the methods for analysis of this substance are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Glutathione pathways in the brain

TL;DR: Results on the export of GSH and GSSG from brain cells as well as on the functions of extracellular GSH in the brain are reviewed and implications of disturbed GSH pathways in brain for neurodegenerative diseases will be discussed.

A colorimetric micro-method for the determination of glutathione.

TL;DR: Evidence is put forward to support a process of cyclo-reduction and a rapid colorimetric and apparently specific micromethod for the determination of total glutathione in small amounts of tissue is described.

The redox state of free nicotinamide–adenine dinucleotide phosphate in the cytoplasm of rat liver

TL;DR: The application of the method of calculation to data published by Kraupp, Adler-Kastner, Niessner & Plank (1967), Goldberg, Passonneau & Lowry (1966) and Kauffman, Brown, passonneau and Lowry (1968) shows that the redox states of the NAD and NADP couples in cardiac-muscle cytoplasm and in mouse-brain cytop lasm are of the same order as those in rat liver.
Journal ArticleDOI

An intracellular GSH-peroxidase with a lipid peroxide substrate.

TL;DR: It was found that an enzymic peroxidase was principally involved and not the hemoprotins previously suggested, but probably accepted any hydroperoxide as substrate, and was readily and irreversibly inhibited by N-ethylaleimide and p-chloromecuribenzoate, but not by other thiol reagents.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of age and sex on glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities and on aerobic glutathione oxidation in rat liver homogenates

TL;DR: It is suggested that the coupled oxidation-reduction through glutathione reductase and glutathion peroxidase is important for determining the redox state of glutATHione and of NADP, and also for controlling the degradation of hydroperoxides.
