Pathological characteristics of colorectal cancers and adenomas developing in 140 members of 34 Hereditary Non-Polyposis ColorectAL Cancer (HNPCC) families are described in this paper.Abstract:
Pathological characteristics of colorectal cancers and adenomas developing in 140 members of 34 Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) families are described. In addition the pathological features of six cancers and 47 adenomas obtained from 216 at risk subjects in colonoscopic surveillance programmes are given. Survival rates for Dukes A, B and C cancers were 90%, 76% and 50% respectively, but only 32% of cancers were Dukes C. This would support the view that HNPCC malignancies are relatively non-aggressive, despite there being an excess of poorly differentiated and mucinous tumours. There is circumstantial evidence that evolution of malignancy occurs through the adenoma - carcinoma sequence.read more

Classification of colorectal cancer based on correlation of clinical, morphological and molecular features
TL;DR: The molecular pathways are determined at an early evolutionary stage and are fully established within precancerous lesions and should accelerate understanding of causation and will impact on clinical management in the areas of both prevention and treatment.

TL;DR: The current state of knowledge regarding pathologic prognostic factors and predictive factors in colorectal carcinoma was evaluated and recommendations were made to increase the uniformity and completeness of pathologic evaluation of tumor specimens and to improve patient care.

TL;DR: The tumour spectrum associated with germline mutations of DNA‐mismatch‐repair genes involves 8 or more organ sites, suggesting a need to develop methods to screen for extra‐colonic cancer also.

Global burden of colorectal cancer: emerging trends, risk factors and prevention strategies
NaNa Keum,Edward Giovannucci +1 more
TL;DR: With increasing incidence of CRC at younger ages, there is an urgent need to better identify high-risk individuals younger than 50 years, the age when screening typically starts, and aspirin probably confers chemopreventive benefit against CRC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic susceptibility to non-polyposis colorectal cancer
TL;DR: The extant genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity in CRC leads to the conclusion that it is no longer appropriate to discuss the genetics of CRC without defining the specific hereditary CRC syndrome of concern, and a detailed differential diagnosis of the several hereditary CRC variants is provided.
