Prevalence of iron deficiency and iron overload in the adult Icelandic population.

TLDR
The results indicated unusually large iron stores in the adult Icelandic population and significantly larger iron Stores in the rural compared to the urban population, and measures to improve the iron balance in urban premenopausal women cannot include increased iron fortification of food but must be more directed towards the target group.

High stored iron levels are associated with excess risk of myocardial infarction in eastern Finnish men.

TL;DR: The data suggest that a high stored iron level, as assessed by elevated serum ferritin concentration, is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.

Geography of HFE C282Y and H63D mutations.

TL;DR: The scarcity of the C282Y mutation in other populations accounts for the lack of HH in non-Europeans.

Screening for hereditary hemochromatosis : A systematic review for the U.S. preventive services task force

TL;DR: Key questions for this focused systematic review were limited to addressing critical evidence gaps in order for the USPSTF to recommend screening, and were applied using strict and consistent definitions of disease, which are described in more detail below.

Low iron-binding capacity as a risk factor for myocardial infarction.

TL;DR: This study suggests that transferrin, measured as TIBC, is an independent negative risk factor for myocardial infarction and sex was in this group still a very strong risk factor after taking into account all classic risk factors as well as the parameters of iron metabolism.

Screening Blood Donors for Hereditary Hemochromatosis: Decision Analysis Model Based on a 30-Year Database

TL;DR: Screening blood donors for hemochromatosis has the potential to improve overall societal health status and decrease third-party payer health care costs over the long-term.

Survival and causes of death in cirrhotic and in noncirrhotic patients with primary hemochromatosis.

TL;DR: It is concluded that patients with hemochromatosis diagnosed in the precirrhotic stage and treated by venesection have a normal life expectancy, whereas cirrhotic patients have a shortened life expectancy and a high risk of liver cancer even when complete iron depletion has been achieved.

Prevalence of Hemochromatosis among 11,065 Presumably Healthy Blood Donors

TL;DR: The value of population screening is demonstrated in these studies by the detection of homozygotes before clinical manifestations of hemochromatosis occur, and the efficacy of transferrin saturation as a screening tool for hemochROMatosis is determined.

Serum ferritin concentration and iron stores in normal subjects

TL;DR: The relationship between serum ferritin concentration and the amount of storage iron has been studied in normal subjects and a high degree of correlation was demonstrated, and the possible advantages of assessing iron stores by using the serum ferrite concentration are discussed.
