Relation between Caloric Intake, Body Weight, and Physical Work STUDIES IN AN INDUSTRIAL MALE POPULATION IN WEST BENGAL

TLDR
It has been shown that when rats are exercised for increasing durations on a treadmill, intakes vary linearly with exercise only within certain limits of activity, and that spontaneous inactivity is a major factor in the development of genetic obesity in the mouse.

Energy Balance and Obesity

TL;DR: The interplay among energy intake, energy expenditure, and body energy stores is described and illustrates how an understanding of energy balance can help us develop strategies to reduce obesity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of the Amount of Exercise on Body Weight, Body Composition, and Measures of Central Obesity STRRIDE—A Randomized Controlled Study

TL;DR: Findings strongly suggest that, absent changes in diet, a higher amount of activity is necessary for weight maintenance and that the positive caloric imbalance observed in the overweight controls is small and can be reversed by a modest amount of exercise.
Journal ArticleDOI

Understanding and Addressing the Epidemic of Obesity: An Energy Balance Perspective

TL;DR: The best strategy for reversing the obesity epidemic is to focus on preventing positive energy balance in the population through small changes in diet and physical activity that take advantage of the authors' biological systems for regulating energy balance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Role of Inactivity in Chronic Diseases: Evolutionary Insight and Pathophysiological Mechanisms

TL;DR: It is proposed that physical inactivity could be considered a behavior selected by evolution for resting, and also selected to be reinforcing in life-threatening situations in which exercise would be dangerous.

How much physical activity is needed to minimize weight gain in previously obese women

TL;DR: Retrospective analyses of weight regain as a function of energy expended in physical activity indicated a threshold for weight maintenance of 47 kJ x kg body wt(-1) x d(-1).

Exercise, Food Intake and Body Weight in Normal Rats and Genetically Obese Adult Mice

TL;DR: It is shown that the development of hereditary obesity in mice can be considerably slowed down by forcing these animals to exercise.

Relative Importance of Inactivity and Overeating in the Energy Balance of Obese High School Girls

TL;DR: Interest has been heightened by the recognition that obesity in children and adolescents, particularly if it has been persistent throughout a major portion of the growth period, is of a particularly “resistant” type.
