Comparison of the results indicates the range of values of the scattering and absorption parameters where the computationally fast diffusion approach is applicable.
Abstract
To allow the determination of scattering and absorption parameters of a turbid material from reflection measurements the relation of these parameters to the reflection has been described by two theoretical approaches. One approach is based on the diffusion theory which has been extended to include anisotropic scattering. This results in a reflection formula in which the scattering and absorption are described by one parameter each. As a second more general approach a Monte Carlo model is applied. Comparison of the results indicates the range of values of the scattering and absorption parameters where the computationally fast diffusion approach is applicable.

Numerical study on the validity of the diffusion approximation for computational optical biopsy.

TL;DR: Simulation results show that the diffusion approximation can be accurately applied if mu's>>mu(a) even if the sensor is very close to the source (>1mm), and an approximate formula is given to describe the measurement of a cut-end fiber probe for a ball source.

Clinical measurements of tissue optical properties in the esophagus and in the oral cavity

TL;DR: In this article, the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients are determined from the observation of the spatial distribution of the diffuse reflectance at the tissue surface under a narrow beam illumination of the tissue, which enables us to evaluate the value of the effective attenuation coefficient which is of major interest in the field of light dosimetry for photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Diffusion of collimated, narrow beam waves in discrete random media.

TL;DR: The three-dimensional diffusion of a narrow beam wave in discrete random media is discussed and the effects of a mismatched boundary are shown to increase the transmitted diffuse flux rather than the spatial spreading.
