TLDR
The hemagglutinin structure at 2.9 angstrom resolution, from a highly pathogenic Vietnamese H5N1 influenza virus, is more related to the 1918 and other human H1 HAs than to a 1997 duck H5 HA, which suggests a path for this H 5N1 virus to gain a foothold in the human population.Abstract:
The hemagglutinin (HA) structure at 2.9 angstrom resolution, from a highly pathogenic Vietnamese H5N1 influenza virus, is more related to the 1918 and other human H1 HAs than to a 1997 duck H5 HA. Glycan microarray analysis of this Viet04 HA reveals an avian α2-3 sialic acid receptor binding preference. Introduction of mutations that can convert H1 serotype HAs to human α2-6 receptor specificity only enhanced or reduced affinity for avian-type receptors. However, mutations that can convert avian H2 and H3 HAs to human receptor specificity, when inserted onto the Viet04 H5 HA framework, permitted binding to a natural human α2-6 glycan, which suggests a path for this H5N1 virus to gain a foothold in the human population.read more

TL;DR: Results indicate that H5 HA can convert to an HA that supports efficient viral transmission in mammals, and will help individuals conducting surveillance in regions with circulating H5N1 viruses to recognize key residues that predict the pandemic potential of isolate, which will inform the development, production and distribution of effective countermeasures.

TL;DR: Comparisons to the soluble N-ethyl-maleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) protein complex of vesicle fusion suggests that these molecules are all in the fusion-activated conformation and that the juxtaposition of the membrane anchor and fusion peptide, a recurring feature, is involved in the fused mechanism.

TL;DR: A previously unidentified antigenic subtype of HA (H16), detected in viruses circulating in black-headed gulls in Sweden, is described and proposed that sequence analyses of HA and NA genes of influenza A viruses be used for the rapid identification of existing and novel HA andNA subtypes.

Structural identification of the antibody-binding sites of Hong Kong influenza haemagglutinin and their involvement in antigenic variation
TL;DR: Four ‘antigenic sites’ on the three-dimensional structure of the influenza haemagglutinin are identified and at least one amino acid substitution in each site seems to be required for the production of new epidemic strains between 1968 and 1975.
