TLDR
It is concluded that only the glycerophospholipids in the human erythrocyte membrane are involved in the maintenance of the (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPase activity, and in particular that fraction of these phospholipid fraction located in the inner half of the membrane.

Lipid polymorphism and the functional roles of lipids in biological membranes.

TL;DR: The possible functional roles of lipids are reviewed in terms of previous models such as the fluid mosaic model of Singer and Nicolson or the earlier unit membrane model so that the requirement for an alternative approach becomes apparent.

Calcium in human red blood cells.

TL;DR: Red blood cells from adult humans are able to keep the Ca concentration in the cytosol several orders of magnitude below that of blood plasma, indicating that the Ca2+ concentration may be as low as M or less in the normal state of the cell (Cao2+ = M).

Chromatographically homogeneous lecithin from egg phospholipids.

TL;DR: The modified method involved application of crude egg phosphatides to a column of alumina in the proportion of 1 g phosphatide/25 g alumina, and elution of the lecithin fraction with the 2-component solvent system chloroform:methanol, 9:1 by vol.

The asymmetric distribution of phospholipids in the human red cell membrane. A combined study using phospholipases and freeze-etch electron microscopy

TL;DR: It is concluded that thisospholipid fraction (which contains the majority of the choline-containing phospholipids and some phosphatidylethanolamine) forms the outer monolayer of the membrane.

Phospholipid model membranes. I. Structural characteristics of hydrated liquid crystals.

TL;DR: The size and shape of the particles as well as the degree of birefringence and the extent to which negative stain penetrates between the lamellae during electron microscopy were characteristic of the various phospholipid species used.
