The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.
Abstract
Recent archaeological discoveries on the island of Paxos reveal that the parliament functioned despite the peripatetic propensity of its part-time legislators. The legislators maintained consistent copies of the parliamentary record, despite their frequent forays from the chamber and the forgetfulness of their messengers. The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.

Senslide: a distributed landslide prediction system

TL;DR: The design, implementation, and current status of Senslide, a distributed sensor system aimed at predicting landslides in the hilly regions of western India, which uses a large number of inexpensive sensor nodes inter-connected by a wireless network is described.

Formal Verification of a Consensus Algorithm in the Heard-Of Model

TL;DR: This work considers formal verification of algorithms expressed in the Heard-Of model recently introduced by Charron-Bost and Schiper, using the proof assistant Isabelle/HOL to verify non-trivial Consensus algorithms.

Fast Genuine Generalized Consensus

Pierre Sutra, +1 more
TL;DR: FGGC is presented, a novel consensus algorithm that reduces recovery delay when a collision occurs to one and tolerates higher latency than Fast Paxos.

Extending Eventually Consistent Cloud Databases for Enforcing Numeric Invariants

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a new replicated data type, called bounded counter, which adds support for numeric invariants to eventually consistent geo-replicated databases, and describe how this can be implemented on top of existing cloud stores without modifying them.

Learning Sciences for Computing Education

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss potential and current overlaps between the learning sciences and computing education research in their origins, theory, and methodology, and argue that the two fields are less integrated than they should be.

Time, clocks, and the ordering of events in a distributed system

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of one event happening before another in a distributed system is examined, and a distributed algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical clocks which can be used to totally order the events.

Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems

TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of concurrency control and recovery mechanisms for transaction management in centralized and distributed database systems is described. But this can lead to interference between queries and updates.

Implementing fault-tolerant services using the state machine approach: a tutorial

TL;DR: The state machine approach is a general method for implementing fault-tolerant services in distributed systems and protocols for two different failure models—Byzantine and fail stop are described.
