The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.Abstract:
Recent archaeological discoveries on the island of Paxos reveal that the parliament functioned despite the peripatetic propensity of its part-time legislators. The legislators maintained consistent copies of the parliamentary record, despite their frequent forays from the chamber and the forgetfulness of their messengers. The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.read more

Dynamic cost-efficient replication in data clouds
TL;DR: This paper proposes a cost-efficient replication scheme across data centers that dynamically adapts the number of replicas employed per partition to the query load, while maintaining availability guarantees in case of failures.

ECHO: A Reliable Distributed Cellular Core Network for Hyper-scale Public Clouds
Binh Nguyen,Tian Zhang,Bozidar Radunovic,Ryan Stutsman,Thomas Karagiannis,Jakub Kocur,Jacobus Van der Merwe +6 more
TL;DR: This paper presents a novel cellular core network architecture, called ECHO, particularly suited to public cloud deployments, where the availability guarantees might be an order of magnitude worse compared to existing (redundant) hardware platforms.

Carousel: Low-Latency Transaction Processing for Globally-Distributed Data
Xinan Yan,Linguan Yang,Hongbo Zhang,Xiayue Charles Lin,Bernard Wong,Kenneth Salem,Tim Brecht +6 more
TL;DR: Carousel shortens transaction processing time by reducing the number of sequential wide-area network round trips required to commit a transaction and replicate its results while maintaining serializability, and introduces a consensus protocol that can perform state replication in parallel with 2PC.

Thoth: Comprehensive Policy Compliance in Data Retrieval Systems
TL;DR: Thoth provides an efficient, kernel-level compliance layer for data use policies that tracks the flow of data through the system, and enforces policy regardless of bugs, misconfigurations, compromises in application code, or actions by unprivileged operators.

Time, clocks, and the ordering of events in a distributed system
TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of one event happening before another in a distributed system is examined, and a distributed algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical clocks which can be used to totally order the events.

Impossibility of distributed consensus with one faulty process
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that every protocol for this problem has the possibility of nontermination, even with only one faulty process.

Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems
TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of concurrency control and recovery mechanisms for transaction management in centralized and distributed database systems is described. But this can lead to interference between queries and updates.

Implementing fault-tolerant services using the state machine approach: a tutorial
TL;DR: The state machine approach is a general method for implementing fault-tolerant services in distributed systems and protocols for two different failure models—Byzantine and fail stop are described.
