The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.Abstract:
Recent archaeological discoveries on the island of Paxos reveal that the parliament functioned despite the peripatetic propensity of its part-time legislators. The legislators maintained consistent copies of the parliamentary record, despite their frequent forays from the chamber and the forgetfulness of their messengers. The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.read more

When consensus meets self-stabilization
TL;DR: The first self-stabilizing wait-free reset mechanism that ensures eventual safety and can be used to implement efficient self-Stabilizing timestamps that are of independent interest is presented.

SAREK: Optimistic Parallel Ordering in Byzantine Fault Tolerance
TL;DR: SAREK is a parallel ordering framework that partitions the service state to exploit parallelism during both agreement as well as execution and provides mechanisms to even handle mis-predictions without requiring rollbacks.

Cardinalities and universal quantifiers for verifying parameterized systems
TL;DR: Tool is presented, an automatic invariant synthesis method that integrates cardinality-based reasoning and universal quantification and the resulting increase of expressiveness allows Tool to verify, for the first time, a representative collection of intricate parameterized protocols.

On the suitability of blockchain platforms for IoT applications: architectures, security, privacy, and performance
Sotirios Brotsis,Konstantinos Limniotis,Gueltoum Bendiab,Nicholas Kolokotronis,Stavros Shiaeles +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a comprehensive and coherent review of the available blockchain solutions to determine their ability to meet the requirements and tackle the challenges of the IoT, using the smart home as the reference domain.

Efficient data aggregation middleware for wireless sensor networks
TL;DR: This consensus algorithm permits ad-hoc, in-network, group formation in response to a detected event, leading to significant savings in communication costs and prolonging of the life of the network.

Time, clocks, and the ordering of events in a distributed system
TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of one event happening before another in a distributed system is examined, and a distributed algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical clocks which can be used to totally order the events.

Impossibility of distributed consensus with one faulty process
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that every protocol for this problem has the possibility of nontermination, even with only one faulty process.

Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems
TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of concurrency control and recovery mechanisms for transaction management in centralized and distributed database systems is described. But this can lead to interference between queries and updates.

Implementing fault-tolerant services using the state machine approach: a tutorial
TL;DR: The state machine approach is a general method for implementing fault-tolerant services in distributed systems and protocols for two different failure models—Byzantine and fail stop are described.
