TLDR
The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.Abstract:
Recent archaeological discoveries on the island of Paxos reveal that the parliament functioned despite the peripatetic propensity of its part-time legislators. The legislators maintained consistent copies of the parliamentary record, despite their frequent forays from the chamber and the forgetfulness of their messengers. The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.read more

Eventual Leader Election with Weak Assumptions on Initial Knowledge, Communication Reliability, and Synchrony
TL;DR: A matching lower bound result shows that any eventual leader election protocol must have runs with this number of eventually timely links, even if all processes know all the processes identities.

A Fully Decentralized Data Usage Control Enforcement Infrastructure
TL;DR: This work presents the first fully decentralized infrastructure for the preventive enforcement of data usage policies, and provides a thorough evaluation of the infrastructure and shows in which scenarios it is superior to a centralized approach.
Commodifying Replicated State Machines with OpenReplica
Deniz Altinbuken,Emin Gün Sirer +1 more
TL;DR: OpenReplica is an open service that provides replication and synchronization support for large-scale distributed systems that supports elasticity requirements of cloud deployments by enabling any number of servers to be replaced dynamically.

The building blocks of consensus
TL;DR: This paper investigates the building blocks of consensus protocols and uses them to assemble a skeleton that can be configured to produce, among others, three well-known consensus protocols: Paxos, Chandra-Toueg, and Ben-Or.

Eventually consistent failure detectors
TL;DR: This paper presents a new class of unreliable failure detectors, which they call Eventually Consistent and denote by ♦C, which adds to the failure detection capabilities of other classes an eventual leader election capability and proposes an efficient algorithm to transform♦C into ♦P.

Time, clocks, and the ordering of events in a distributed system
TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of one event happening before another in a distributed system is examined, and a distributed algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical clocks which can be used to totally order the events.

Impossibility of distributed consensus with one faulty process
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that every protocol for this problem has the possibility of nontermination, even with only one faulty process.

Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems
TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of concurrency control and recovery mechanisms for transaction management in centralized and distributed database systems is described. But this can lead to interference between queries and updates.

Implementing fault-tolerant services using the state machine approach: a tutorial
TL;DR: The state machine approach is a general method for implementing fault-tolerant services in distributed systems and protocols for two different failure models—Byzantine and fail stop are described.
