The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.
Abstract
Recent archaeological discoveries on the island of Paxos reveal that the parliament functioned despite the peripatetic propensity of its part-time legislators. The legislators maintained consistent copies of the parliamentary record, despite their frequent forays from the chamber and the forgetfulness of their messengers. The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.

Bitcoin as a Transaction Ledger: A Composable Treatment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a composition-based security proof for Bitcoin, which is based on the property-based approach of existing security proofs, and as such they do not support composition.

Method and system for resource monitoring of disparate resources in a server cluster

TL;DR: A method and system in a server cluster for monitoring and controlling a resource object, such as a physical device or application, is described in this article, where a cluster service connects to a resource monitoring component to control and monitor the health of one or more resource objects.

Rethinking enterprise network control

TL;DR: Ethane allows managers to define a single network-wide fine-grain policy and then enforces it directly, and is compatible with existing high-fanout switches by porting it to popular commodity switching chipsets.

RADOS: a scalable, reliable storage service for petabyte-scale storage clusters

TL;DR: The design and implementation of RADOS is presented, a reliable object storage service that can scales to many thousands of devices by leveraging the intelligence present in individual storage nodes by allowing nodes to act semi-autonomously to self-manage replication, failure detection, and failure recovery through the use of a small cluster map.

ElasTraS: An Elastic Transactional Data Store in the Cloud

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose ElasTraS which addresses the scalability and elasticity of the data store in a cloud computing environment to leverage from the elastic nature of the underlying infrastructure, while providing scalable transactional data access.

Time, clocks, and the ordering of events in a distributed system

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of one event happening before another in a distributed system is examined, and a distributed algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical clocks which can be used to totally order the events.

Impossibility of distributed consensus with one faulty process

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that every protocol for this problem has the possibility of nontermination, even with only one faulty process.

Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems

TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of concurrency control and recovery mechanisms for transaction management in centralized and distributed database systems is described. But this can lead to interference between queries and updates.

Implementing fault-tolerant services using the state machine approach: a tutorial

TL;DR: The state machine approach is a general method for implementing fault-tolerant services in distributed systems and protocols for two different failure models—Byzantine and fail stop are described.
