The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.Abstract:
Recent archaeological discoveries on the island of Paxos reveal that the parliament functioned despite the peripatetic propensity of its part-time legislators. The legislators maintained consistent copies of the parliamentary record, despite their frequent forays from the chamber and the forgetfulness of their messengers. The Paxon parliament's protocol provides a new way of implementing the state machine approach to the design of distributed systems.read more

Formal modeling and verification of distributed failure detectors
TL;DR: The results reported are sufficient for advocating the need for applying model checking techniques as debugging and propose fixes for deadlock avoidance and model check the proposed algorithm in UPPAAL, FDR2 and MCRL2.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamic group communication
TL;DR: The paper proposes new specifications – in the primary partition model – for dynamic reliable broadcast, dynamic atomic broadcast and group membership, and these are “syntactically” close to the static specifications, but they are also “semantically”close to the dynamic specifications proposed in the literature.

On the Feasibility of a Consistent and Fault-Tolerant Data Store for SDNs
TL;DR: This paper argues that with the use of modern distributed systems techniques it is possible to build a strongly consistent, fault-tolerant SDN control framework that achieves acceptable performance.

The Alpha of Indulgent Consensus
Rachid Guerraoui,Michel Raynal +1 more
TL;DR: This paper presents a simple framework unifying a family of consensus algorithms that can tolerate process crash failures and asynchronous periods of the network, also called indulgent consensus algorithms, and introduces a new abstraction, called Alpha, which precisely captures consensus safety.

On the Origins and Variations of Blockchain Technologies
TL;DR: The five key elements of a blockchain are identified, the embodiments of these elements are shown, and how these elements come together to yield important properties in selected systems are examined.

Time, clocks, and the ordering of events in a distributed system
TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of one event happening before another in a distributed system is examined, and a distributed algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical clocks which can be used to totally order the events.

Impossibility of distributed consensus with one faulty process
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that every protocol for this problem has the possibility of nontermination, even with only one faulty process.

Concurrency Control and Recovery in Database Systems
TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of concurrency control and recovery mechanisms for transaction management in centralized and distributed database systems is described. But this can lead to interference between queries and updates.

Implementing fault-tolerant services using the state machine approach: a tutorial
TL;DR: The state machine approach is a general method for implementing fault-tolerant services in distributed systems and protocols for two different failure models—Byzantine and fail stop are described.
