TLDR
In this article, a quantitative theory covering the full range of processes from transient settling of large, stable particles to the slow consolidation of flocculated suspensions of submicron particles is proposed.Abstract:
The consolidation or concentration of suspended particulate solids under the influence of gravitational forces is a problem of widespread practical and theoretical interest. The literature, which is scattered over several fields, contains most of the elements necessary for a complete understanding of gravity settling, but considerable controversy and confusion persists about their synthesis. Here we propose to construct a quantitative theory covering the full range of processes from transient settling of large, stable particles to the slow consolidation of flocculated suspensions of submicron particles. Conditions for the existence of shocks are identified and the basic equations describing the phenomena are solved numerically for several Peclet numbers.read more

An incompressible three-dimensional multiphase particle-in-cell model for dense particle flows
TL;DR: In this paper, a three-dimensional, incompressible, multiphase particle-in-cell method for dense particle flows is presented, which solves the governing equations of the fluid phase using a continuum model and those of the particle phase using Lagrangian model.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider the evolution of an initially small voidage disturbance in a gas-fluidized bed and examine the growth of a single KdV voidage soliton, following its development through several different regimes.

Consolidation Behavior of Flocculated Alumina Suspensions

TL;DR: In this paper, the consolidation behavior of flocculated alumina suspensions has been analyzed as a function of the interparticle energy, and it has been shown that strongly attractive interactions result in a particle network which resists consolidation and shows compressible behavior over a large stress range.

Solidification of colloidal suspensions
TL;DR: In this article, a mathematical model of the unidirectional solidification of a suspension of hard-sphere colloids is presented, where the volume fraction and temperature profiles are obtained ahead of a planar solidification front.

A calculation of the viscous force exerted by a flowing fluid on a dense swarm of particles
TL;DR: In this paper, the viscous force exerted by a flowing fluid on a dense swarm of particles is described by a modification of Darcy's equation, which was necessary in order to obtain consistent boundary conditions.

Brownian diffusion of particles with hydrodynamic interaction
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that the particle flux in probability space due to Brownian motion is the same as that which would be produced by the application of a certain "thermodynamic" force to each particle.
