Tripartite synapses: astrocytes process and control synaptic information

TLDR
There is an emerging view, which is reviewed herein, in which brain function actually arises from the coordinated activity of a network comprising both neurons and glia, rather than the classically accepted paradigm that brain function results exclusively from neuronal activity.

Principles of Neural Science

Michael P. Alexander
- 06 Jun 1986 -
TL;DR: The editors have done a masterful job of weaving together the biologic, the behavioral, and the clinical sciences into a single tapestry in which everyone from the molecular biologist to the practicing psychiatrist can find and appreciate his or her own research.

Astrocytes: biology and pathology

TL;DR: Astrocyte functions in healthy CNS, mechanisms and functions of reactive astrogliosis and glial scar formation, and ways in which reactive astrocytes may cause or contribute to specific CNS disorders and lesions are reviewed.

Neuropathological Alterations in Alzheimer Disease

TL;DR: Postmortem studies have enabled the staging of the progression of both amyloid and tangle pathologies, and the development of diagnostic criteria that are now used worldwide, and these cross-sectional neuropathological data have been largely validated by longitudinal in vivo studies using modern imaging biomarkers such as amyloids PET and volumetric MRI.
Journal ArticleDOI

Astrocyte-Neuron Lactate Transport Is Required for Long-Term Memory Formation

TL;DR: It is concluded that astrocyte-neuron lactate transport is required for long-term memory formation, suggesting that lactate import into neurons is necessary for long -term memory.

Tripartite synapses : Glia, the unacknowledged partner

TL;DR: It is suggested that perisynaptic Schwann cells and synaptically associated astrocytes should be viewed as integral modulatory elements of tripartite synapses.
