TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between the size of partner enterprises, the duration of an alliance, and the type of innovations implemented as a result of the alliance and tried to predict the probability of introducing a product, process and organizational innovation.
Abstract: This article characterises theoretical problems regarding the essence and exchange of knowledge between enterprises within the framework of strategic alliances. The objective of the conducted empirical research was to identify the relationships between specific features related to obtaining and sharing knowledge and the specificity of cooperating enterprises and the characteristics of an alliance. We also investigated the relationship between the size of partner enterprises, the duration of an alliance, and the type of innovations implemented as a result of the alliance. We tried to predict the probability of introducing a product, process and organizational innovation depending on the size of the company and duration of the alliance, as well as other variables characterising the company and the knowledge obtaining process. The results indicate that the relationship between the size of enterprises participating in an alliance and a favourable evaluation of the acquisition and sharing of knowledge is closer than in the case of the duration of an alliance. The research results also demonstrate that the correlation between the implementation of innovations and the duration of an alliance is stronger than in the case of the enterprise size. Establishing the relationships between the assumed variables for acquiring and sharing knowledge, as well as considering them in relation with the enterprise size and the alliance duration offer an added value to what has already been achieved in this area.

TL;DR: In this article, a literature review on the studies investigating how leaders affect organizational CSR, why organizations engage in CSR and how the environment affects the leader and the organizational approach has been carried out.
Abstract: The main aim of the paper is to provide evidence that merging the corporate social responsibility (CSR), the leadership, and the social entrepreneurship literatures informs and benefit all these literatures. With this aim, a literature review on the studies investigating how leaders affect organizational CSR, why organizations engage in CSR, and how the environment affects the leader and the organizational CSR approach has been carried out. The outcome is a microfocused, multilevel, and multitheoretical conceptual framework, able to underline the links between the role of the leader, the organizational CSR approach, and the sustainable development of the territory. The conceptual framework has been applied to the GOEL case study, a strategic alliance operating in an unfavorable context. The findings provide evidence of the pivotal role of the leader in defining the organizational CSR approach and that the societal and cultural contexts affect the way in which leader faces the sustainability challenges.

Abstract: This paper studies inventory share policies for sustainable omni-channel e-commerce supply network design by seeking for a good integration policy of online and offline retailers so that the overall supply network reduce its cost, environmental negative impacts by the decreased number of shipments from the main depot, and increase its responsiveness. By the recent advancement in information technologies and internet use, e-commerce practice gained popularity also to keep up with the competitive environment. The increased competitive supply chain environment has revealed the business-to-business (B2B) concepts enabling business applications between companies. Strategic alliance is a partnership concept realized between two or more organizations ensuring that stages are managed with consideration of the welfare of the others in the whole network. By considering that there are inventory share policies between stages, we accept the existence of strategic alliance implementation in the network, aiming to increase total network flexibility and profitability as well as sustainability in the network. In the study, we research inventory share policies towards strategic alliance concept to have a network design with a decreased negative effect of demand uncertainty and increased profitability in the network. By inventory share policies, businesses share their current inventories with the others so that transportation cost and CO2 emission caused by traffic intensity is decreased in the network. We propose six inventory share policy combinations and optimize the (s, S) inventory levels under those policies by minimizing total network cost. We utilize the simulation modeling approach for the modeling purpose. We compare the policy results based on the total network cost, the total number of shipments completed from the main warehouse, and total lost sale cost, etc., at the optimal levels and suggest the best policy design.

TL;DR: This new enhanced hybrid theoretical model is designed to find the best strategies toward preparation for preventing a network malfunction from an attacker through strategic alliances with other genuine nodes and it is developed based on the combination of a strategic management framework and a conventional stochastic modelbased on the Blockchain Governance Game.
Abstract: This paper deals with design of an alternative secure Blockchain network framework to prevent damages from an attacker. The alliance concept from the strategic management perspectives is applied on the top of a general stochastic game framework. This new enhanced hybrid theoretical model is designed to find the best strategies toward preparation for preventing a network malfunction from an attacker through strategic alliances with other genuine nodes and it is developed based on the combination of a strategic management framework and a conventional stochastic model based on the Blockchain Governance Game. Analytically, tractable results for decision-making parameters are fully obtained to predict of the moment for operations and also to provide the optimal number of allegiance nodes to protect a Blockchain network. This research helps those whom are considering initial coin offering or launching new Blockchain-based services by enhancing security features through strategic alliances in a decentralized network.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the pre-existing and emerging perceptions between Argentina and Brazil in the period 2003-2019 and how they shaped the regional integration processes, and highlight as the most relevant three ideal models/types that move towards two extremes to achieve a third that synthesizes them: the strategic alliance; nationalist-military thought (or traditional suspicion); and Mutually Assured Trust (MAT).
Abstract: In the evolution of contemporary international politics, ideological turns are important factors that affect the resetting of governments' external agendas and of intra-regional and extra-regional ties. All of them are affected by the worldviews of political leaders who occupy a prominent place in governments and by the types of leadership that presidents choose to have in the exercise of their functions. This prompts us to analyse and reflect on the forms of international insertion South American countries in the regional, continental and global scene based on the perceptions of these leaders. The challenge is to analyse the pre-existing and emerging perceptions between Argentina and Brazil in the period 2003-2019 and how they shaped the regional integration processes. At the same time, this paper examines their trends based on the operational milieu, that is, according to the international and regional context and the evaluation of integrationist alternatives. The hypothesis is that the changes that took place in the operational milieu were a determining factor in the setting of the psychological milieu; and that the resetting of the agenda regarding regional integration shows both a change in perceptions and an effort to adapt to external and internal political turns. Thus, among the various existing perceptions, we highlight as the most relevant three ideal models/types that move towards two extremes to achieve a third that synthesizes them: the strategic alliance; nationalist-military thought (or traditional suspicion); and Mutually Assured Trust (MAT). The creation of concepts such as the MAT implies advancing in a relational model that removes uncertainty from the bilateral relationship.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore two previously unconnected but aligned streams of literature: (i) work on strategic business alliances in general (R1) and work on corporate/Indigenous community partnerships specifically (R2).
Abstract: How might diverse and often conflicting knowledge and belief structures and practices be mobilized into legitimate approaches for people looking to address the need for heightened responsible and sustainable entrepreneurial action by business organizations; humanizing the role of business in development? To answer this question, we explore two previously unconnected but aligned streams of literature: (i) work on strategic business alliances in general (R1); and (ii) work on corporate/Indigenous community partnerships specifically (R2). A systematic literature search identified 300 papers on the topics in total. We selected 39 general and 23 Indigenous-specific papers for review using a guiding classification matrix to determine principal themes and concepts. Both streams of literature were reviewed, and an approach was developed to identify areas where the empirical observation of Indigenous partnerships provides a contribution to the theory and practice of Indigenous entrepreneurship within the realm of strategic alliance formation, and vice versa. The paper concludes with a discussion of dissimilarities in the two streams of literature and maps out avenues for future research into strategic alliances involving corporate responsibility and sustainability (CRS), approaches based on Indigenous belief and value systems, and Indigenous entrepreneurship.

TL;DR: In this article, a home-delivery-oriented agri-food supply chain (HASC) alliance is proposed to develop a cooperative organization via collaborative strategies and alliance structures, which form a substantive relationship to gain a stable foothold in the emerging e-commerce market.
Abstract: The high cost of operation and severe competition in the agri-food e-commerce market make it hard for the small and medium agri-food enterprises (A-SMEs) to operate cost-efficiently and in a sustainable manner. This paper seeks to organize A-SMEs to develop a cooperative organization via collaborative strategies and alliance structures, named as the home-delivery-oriented agri-food supply chain (HASC) alliance, to form a substantive relationship to gain a stable foothold in the emerging e-commerce market. A theoretical framework of the HASC alliance is built with its organizational structure and schematics of the process of implementation strategies that cover the aspects of last-mile chain extension, food transportation, and production/distribution control. Furthermore, a three-step analytical method is proposed to analyze the performance of the alliance with the aim to provide appropriate strategies to hedge against the potential risks of cooperation instability. A hypothetical case is conducted, and the results show that: (1) the performance of the hypothetical HASC alliance with time shows significant variation in the beginning, but it gains stability with the application of stability control strategies; (2) the cooperation stability of HASC alliance is very sensitive to the performance of the strategies that control the customer and environment variations; (3) the factors of trust and market fluctuation have higher effects on membership and environmental stability, respectively; (4) the minimum and maximum cost ranges of control strategies at which the alliance can maintain its stability and performance are 5% and 29%, respectively, of the total operation cost.

TL;DR: In this paper, the landscape of Sicilian wine cooperatives is described by collating and processing different types of statistical sources, which have been integrated by direct surveys undertaken in 2017.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to verify whether, besides the traditional organisational models mainly implemented by wine-making cooperatives, more modern and hybrid organisational forms can be profitably applied within an increasingly competitive wine market.,The study outlined in this paper deployed a mixed method. Specifically, an archived analysis, a survey and a descriptive case study (including visits, interviews and documentary analysis) were the methodological techniques used in this study, which were “in series but integrated” between themselves. In this paper, the landscape of Sicilian wine cooperatives is described by collating and processing different types of statistical sources, which have been integrated by direct surveys undertaken in 2017. Thereafter, the study focussed on a wine cooperative with a specific business model and a strategic edge by analysing its strategic choices and main structural and governance characteristics. Within this case study, a financial ratio analysis, which was based on 2011-2017 financial statements, was conducted to analyse the profitability, financial balance, capital structure and debt relationships of the wine cooperative.,The Sicilian wine cooperative system is still predominantly characterised by partial and vertical integration, implemented by cooperatives which elect to sell mainly bulk wine to wine merchants. In such a context, there is scope for other degrees of integration and strategic inter-firm alliances; the latter includes “vertical quasi-integration”. The study demonstrated how the wine cooperative under investigation is overcoming the structural problems of the regional wine sector and why it is retaining such a strategic alliance with one of the most important Italian wine conglomerates. Indeed, it has acquired greater strength and reliability since its collaboration with the aforementioned wine company. Thus, total revenue and the company’s market share of packaged wine have increased. However, there are still margins for improving sales’ profitability.,This study has territorial limitations but Sicilian wine cooperatives generally play an important role in the regional, Italian and European wine industries. As such, this research should be considered as an exploratory study, deserving further investigation into different strategic choices within the wine cooperative system by performing cross-case comparisons. Results may also be useful in orienting cooperative strategies in Sicily (or further afield) to small-to-medium wine cooperatives, often lacking specific abilities relating to the distribution, marketing and selling of their wine. Public agricultural policies may also be enlightened by these research pathways.,The authors contend that their study provides hitherto missing information relating to inter-firm strategic alliances, which wine cooperatives might implement to enhance their competitiveness and survive in the long-run.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the influence of interorganizational knowledge sharing enablers-communication, trust, shared vision, commitment, learning intent, and absorptive capacity directly and indirectly through interorganization knowledge sharing process on behavioural innovation outcome in strategic alliances of 4- and 5-stars hotels of world heritage cities of Istanbul and Antalya.
Abstract: The study aims to investigate the influence of inter-organizational knowledge sharing enablers-communication, trust, shared vision, commitment, learning intent, and absorptive capacity directly and indirectly through interorganizational knowledge sharing process on behavioural innovation outcome in strategic alliances of 4- & 5-stars hotels of world heritage cities of Istanbul and Antalya. For data collection, the quota sampling method is applied to select the 250 senior hotel executives engaged in collaborative strategic hospitality alliances. Besides, to test the hypotheses, descriptive, correlation as well as regression analyses are performed through the SPSS. The current study finds that the six facets of relational and social capital inter-organizational knowledge sharingenablers offered and examined have significant impacts, directly and indirectly through inter-organizational knowledge sharing process on the innovative behavioural outcome of hospitality alliance firms. The results imply that the hospitality industry in its policy agenda should recognize that relational and social capital-based knowledge sharing strategic alliances can be a vital source of collaborative innovation. Finally, the current research also provides the empirical recognition of historic cities of Turkey as cultural destinations, so emphasizing the appropriateness of world heritage cities to investigate inter-firm relationships across hospitality alliance firms.

TL;DR: In this article, a questionnaire approach is used to collect data, and a moderated structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses and found that new product creativity has a positive influence on alliance ambidexterity, whereas causal ambiguity moderates these associations.
Abstract: There has been little research discussing the role that new product creativity plays in achieving alliance ambidexterity and how causal ambiguity may be a potential moderator in the association between new product creativity and alliance ambidexterity. The purpose of this study is to identify the contingent role of causal ambiguity and examine the relationships between new product creativity, causal ambiguity and alliance ambidexterity.,In this empirical study, a questionnaire approach is used to collect data, and moderated structural equation modeling is used to test the hypotheses.,The findings indicate that new product creativity has a positive influence on alliance ambidexterity, whereas causal ambiguity moderates these associations. When causal ambiguity increases, the positive impact of new product creativity on alliance ambidexterity is attenuated.,This study integrates the ambidexterity literature and the alliance literature by applying the concept of ambidexterity to a strategic alliance context. The moderating role of causal ambiguity echoes previous research postulating causal ambiguity as a barrier to knowledge transfer in alliances. Given a higher level of causal ambiguity, firms face more difficulty when they attempt to develop new product creativity to achieve the desired level of alliance ambidexterity.,Managers could initiate incentive programs and build supportive environments that facilitate new product creativity. Firms will be capable of elaborating the potential of new product creativity to further facilitate alliance ambidexterity. Managers need to pay attention to causal ambiguity that may have a moderating influence on the relationship between new product creativity and alliance ambidexterity.,This study contributes to the synthesis of new product creativity and alliance ambidexterity and helps scholars and managers to better understand the moderating effect of causal ambiguity in the context of the innovation and ambidexterity literature.

TL;DR: This article conducted a meta-analysis of the relationships between trust and seven antecedents: reputation, communication, shared norms and values, cooperation/support, negative past behaviors, satisfaction with/quality of services, and fairness.
Abstract: Trust, defined as a willingness of one entity (e.g., stakeholders) to be vulnerable to the discretionary actions of another (e.g., a wildlife management agencies), is a key attribute of effective environmental management. A lack of clarity about which factors matter most in developing and sustaining trust creates an impediment to good governance. Our objective was to derive a set of antecedents of trust from research reported in peer-reviewed literature in natural resource and environmental science, management and policy domains. We conducted a meta-analysis of the relationships between trust and seven antecedents: reputation, communication, shared norms and values, cooperation/support, negative past behaviors, satisfaction with/quality of services, and fairness. We also examined whether relationships between antecedents and trust differ depending on whether the target of trust is a specific person or the organization as an entity, as well as whether the relationship with the referent of trust is horizontal (i.e., between natural resource agencies partnering together) or vertical (i.e., between stakeholders and agencies). Results provide estimates of relationships between each antecedent and trust, as well as the relative importance of the antecedents in predicting trust. We conclude by evaluating the state of the literature on trust and providing recommendations for future research.

TL;DR: In this article, a game-theoretic approach was proposed to examine several possible coalition strategies in a four-echelon supply chain consisting of a supplier, manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer.
Abstract: We propose a game‐theoretic approach to examine several possible coalition strategies in a four‐echelon supply chain consisting of a supplier, manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer. A solitude model is used to probe the role of learning in quality improvements, and experimental design is conducted to evaluate all possible supply chain coalition strategies between echelons. The novelty of this study is the comprehensive evaluation of knowledge‐sharing strategies in collaborative supply chains. The results confirm that the Delta model with a coalition among a supplier, manufacturer, and retailer is the best strategy.

TL;DR: This work analyzes the long-term effects of a government program on the strategic alliance network of 451 organizations in the high-tech semiconductor industry between 1987 and 1999, using stochastic network analysis methods for longitudinal social networks.
Abstract: Governments have long standing interests in preventing market failures and enhancing innovation in strategic industries. Public policy regarding domestic technology is critical to both national security and economic prosperity. Governments often seek to enhance their global competitiveness by promoting private sector cooperative activity at the inter-organizational level. Research on network governance has illuminated the structure of boundary-spanning collaboration mainly for programs with immediate public or non-profit objectives. Far less research has examined how governments might accelerate private sector cooperation to prevent market failures or to enhance innovation. The theoretical contribution of this research is to suggest that government programs might catalyze cooperative activity by accelerating the preferential attachment mechanism inherent in social networks. We analyze the long-term effects of a government program on the strategic alliance network of 451 organizations in the high-tech semiconductor industry between 1987 and 1999, using stochastic network analysis methods for longitudinal social networks.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the effects of U.S. science and technology policy on the technological performance of organizations in a global strategic alliance network and showed that governments might achieve policy through interorganizational innovations aimed at the development and administration of robust governance networks.
Abstract: This research analyzes the effects of U.S. science and technology policy on the technological performance of organizations in a global strategic alliance network. During the mid-1980s the U.S. semiconductor industry appeared to be collapsing. Industry leaders and policymakers moved to support and protect U.S. firms by creating a program called Sematech. While many scholars regard Sematech as a success, how the program succeeded remains unclear. This study re-contextualizes Sematech as a network administrative organization which lowered cooperation costs and enhanced resource combination for innovation at the cutting edge. This study combines network analysis and longitudinal regression techniques to test the effects of public policy on organizational network position and technological performance in an unbalanced panel of semiconductor firms between 1986 and 2001. This research suggests governments might achieve policy through inter-organizational innovations aimed at the development and administration of robust governance networks.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed the value-driving forces of Med-Tech enterprise, based on five aspects: professional competence (PC), operation management (OM), critical resources (CR), regulatory system (RS), and market expansion (ME).
Abstract: The medical technology (Med-Tech) industry turnover has reached a record high, attracting a great deal of capital investment, while mergers and acquisitions continually increase. In order to move to a higher value-added segment, traditional Med-Tech manufacturers have to transform into digital smart manufacturers. This development trend promotes industrial operators of Med-Tech to consider how to strengthen professional competence, expand their market, and determine the future direction. This study proposed the value-driving forces of Med-Tech enterprise, based on five aspects: Professional competence (PC), operation management (OM), critical resources (CR), regulatory system (RS), and market expansion (ME). Then, the acquisition and importance analysis (AIA) and the network relation map (NRM) approaches were proposed and implemented to find an optimal pathway for a Med-Tech enterprise to implement digital transformation. Our findings suggest that Med-Tech enterprises should treat RS as the priority in transformation. Finally, based on small- and medium-sized Med-Tech enterprise scenarios, we propose four development strategies (direct acquisition, strategic alliance, maintenance status, and in-house development) should be decided in the digital transformation process.

TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid approach combining Grey Theory with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been proposed in this research to assess and predict the performance of some Vietnamese estate companies, in addition to helping to form the right partnership.
Abstract: The high economic development in Vietnam contributes much momentum to boost the estate industry in this country. However, competition in this market is also increased. To survive better in this industry, the estate companies in the Vietnam estate industry can apply strategic alliance which, however, depends heavily on forming the right partnership. For this purpose, a hybrid approach combining Grey Theory with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been proposed in this research to assess and predict the performance of some Vietnamese estate companies, in addition to helping to form the right partnership. For empirical study, 16 companies in the Vietnam estate industry have been selected as Decision Making Units (DMUs). After collecting these DMUs’ historical data in the time period 2012-2017, the grey model GM (1,1) was first used to forecast the performance of these DMUs in 2018-2020. Then, the slacks-based measure (SBM) super efficiency (super SBM) model was used to assess their performance. To initiate partnerships, Becamex Infrastructure Development Joint Stock Company (IJC) has been selected as a target company and it can develop 15 different strategic alliance scenarios. The experimental results show that only some of the scenarios are beneficial. Thus, prudence is a necessity when using strategic alliance.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is as follows: studying a case for technological innovation in Iran; studying the process of network creation; studying different challenges in finding, forming and performing of a collaboration network; studying comprehensive identification and analysis of the challenges in the network creation process; studying an active collaboration network in the field of medical equipment; and studying a network with different partners (consisting of a large company, a small- and medium-sized company, two subcontractors, three universities, a start-up, an accelerator and a venture capital fund).,The qualitative research method has been used because of a deep and rich analysis of the studied network. The study also provides an overview of finding and forming of partners and details of collaborations in the network, including partner’s goals from network entry, initial negotiations between members, business plan, shared resources and final results are expressed. The data used in this study has been collected by a totally seven semi-structured interviews. To analyze the collected data by open coding, the MAXQDA12 software was used and the basic concepts were identified and were categorized based on their similarities.,The studied network was identified as a strategic alliance. Details of finding, forming and performing of the studied network were explained. In total, 4 collaboration models and 28 different challenges in the network creation process were identified. In total, 28 different challenges were divided into 7 categories (based on their existence or absence in each of the 4 identified collaboration models). In total, seven categories of challenges were analyzed completely and the relations between challenges and partners of collaboration models were studied.,The collaboration network studied in this research involves several technological collaborations among different actors. Saadat, as the hub of this network, has been involved in all these collaborations, and other members have joined the network in accordance with network requirements and their capabilities. This network has been formed and developed with the aim of developing and producing various modules of vital signs monitoring since 2009. Some of the collaborations in this network, which are for production of a specific module and require long-term collaboration between the partners (such as the production of electrocardiograph or heart attack rapid diagnostic module), continue to be ongoing and some of them that focus on research and development or acquisition of technical knowledge (such as academic collaboration) after the specified result has been ended.
