TL;DR: The "Overviewed Conception of Man in Modern Sociology" as discussed by the authors is a collection of essays written by the late sociologist and author of "Skeptical Sociology: The Problem of Order, Population and Society, Class Fertility Trends in Western Nations, Power: Its Forms, Bases, and Uses".
Abstract: The chapters in this volume represent some of Dennis Wrong's best and most enduring essays. Initially published as "Skeptical Sociology, " this collection displays his ability to write compellingly for general intellectual audiences as well as for academic sociologists. The book is divided into sections that represent Wrong's major areas of interest and investigation: "Human Nature and the Perspective of Sociology," "Social Stratification and Inequality," and "Power and Politics." Each section is preceded by a short introduction that places the articles in context and elaborates and often sheds new light on the contents. The essays in the first section were written with polemical intent, directed against the assumptions of academic sociology that prevailed in an earlier period. Part two calls attention to the neglect by functionalists of power, group conflict, and historical change; Wrong shows that failure to consider them made functional theories of stratification especially vulnerable. The third section is more heterogeneous in subject and theme than the others; all the essays in it touch in some way on power or politics. Included in this volume is Wrong's celebrated and much-quoted article "The Oversocialized Conception of Man in Modern Sociology." Other significant essays reveal the author's views on many timely topics of sociological concern, such as the quests for "community" and for "identity"; the Freudian, Marxian, and Weberian heritages in sociology; social class in America; meritocracy; a theory of democratic politics; humanist, positivist, and functionalist perspectives; and the sociology of the future. "The Oversocialized Conception of Man" is an indispensable volume for sociologists, political theorists, and historians. "Dennis H. Wrong" is emeritus professor of sociology at New York University. He is the author of "The Problem of Order, Population and Society, Class Fertility Trends in Western Nations, Power: Its Forms, Bases, and Uses (also published by Transaction), and The Modern Condition (forthcoming).

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper examined theme restaurant customers' decision-making process in light of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model and found that the extended TPB model surpasses the TPB in predicting customers' behavioral intention.
Abstract: This paper aims to examine theme restaurant customers’ decision-making process in light of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model.,This investigation is conducted by an on-site survey with 357 theme restaurant customers who have a dining experience in China. The current study used Anderson and Gerbing’s (1998) two-step method.,Study results indicate the extended TPB model surpasses the TPB in predicting customers’ behavioral intention. Findings not only identified attitude and involvement as useful mediators in the model but also provided evidence of possible relationships in the proposed model.,The relationships in the extended TPB offer practical solutions for theme restaurant managers and ways to increase the customers’ intention to revisit their establishments.,With servicescape as an external factor and perceived authenticity and involvement as psychological factors incorporated into the TPB, the proposed framework supported the analysis of those underlying factors in the context of theme restaurants toward clarifying the formation of customer’s intention to revisit those restaurants.

TL;DR: This approach significantly improves the relevance of the generated poems by representing each line of the poem not only in a context-sensitive manner but also in a holistic way that is highly related to the given keyword and the learned topic.
Abstract: Computer poetry generation is our first step towards computer writing. Writing must have a theme. The current approaches of using sequence-to-sequence models with attention often produce non-thematic poems. We present a novel conditional variational autoencoder with a hybrid decoder adding the deconvolutional neural networks to the general recurrent neural networks to fully learn topic information via latent variables. This approach significantly improves the relevance of the generated poems by representing each line of the poem not only in a context-sensitive manner but also in a holistic way that is highly related to the given keyword and the learned topic. A proposed augmented word2vec model further improves the rhythm and symmetry. Tests show that the generated poems by our approach are mostly satisfying with regulated rules and consistent themes, and 73.42% of them receive an Overall score no less than 3 (the highest score is 5).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the genre of "vaporwave" and explore the way the genre works as a project that produces, and takes pleasure in, a kind of "memory play".
Abstract: In this article I focus on the genre of ‘vaporwave’, using the artist 18 Carat Affair as a case study, to explore the way the genre works as a project that produces, and takes pleasure in, a kind of ‘memory play’. As a genre, vaporwave is a style of music collaged together from a wide variety of largely background musics such as muzak®, 1980s elevator music and new age ambience. Vaporwave's ‘memory play’ is a project that takes remembering as its audio-visual aesthetic. The pleasure of vaporwave is therefore understood as a pleasure of remembering for the sake of the act of remembering itself. To explore this theme, I examine vaporwave's memory play using the terms of Chris Healy's ‘compensatory nostalgia’, as well as the idea of ‘ersatz nostalgia’ as discussed by Arjun Appadurai and Svetlana Boym.

TL;DR: The New Peasantries as discussed by the authors is a popular text for postgraduate courses and has been used to simplify the structure of the book and make it more accessible as a textbook for students.
Abstract: When first published in 2008, The New Peasantries revolutionized our ways of thinking of what constitutes the peasantry and repeasantization. It showed how a new era of empire and globalization was creating new forms of peasantry. This new edition is thoroughly revised, with a reorganization of chapters and several new chapters added. It includes a new chapter on China, based on the author's extensive fieldwork there, and much more information on Brazil. It integrates and critically reviews the many publications on peasants, peasantries and peasant modes of agricultural production published in recent years. The theoretical discussion is enriched with more attention to the seminal work of Chayanov. Greater attention is also paid to the construction of new markets – a theme that will remain a major issue in the coming decade. It combines and integrates different bodies of literature: the rich traditions of peasant studies, development and rural sociology, neo-institutional economics and debates on empire and globalization. The original book has been used in several international postgraduate courses. The experience and feedback thus obtained has been used to simplify the structure of the book and make it more accessible as a textbook for students.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of relevant literature, discussion of valuable findings, and presentation of a contemporary panorama of the theme of flexibility are integrated to reinterpret the contemporary sense of dwelling.
Abstract: The economic, technological, and cultural transformations of our present society influence various scales of our daily lives. In housing, these transformations include changes in the family nucleus and the activities performed in living spaces. Housing flexibility seeks to meet the multiple needs of users by changing their living spaces and functions. This study aims to explore housing flexibility through a review of relevant literature, discussion of valuable findings, and presentation of a contemporary panorama of the theme. Notions of flexibility are integrated to reinterpret the contemporary sense of dwelling. However, the lack of a well-defined concept of flexibility hinders the integration of methods and theories on the subject.

Abstract: Aim The aim of this systematic review was to identify the evidence contributed by qualitative research studies of foreign educated nurses' work experiences in a new country and to link the results to patient safety competencies. Design A systematic literature review of qualitative studies. Methods Electronic searches in the Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and Cinahl databases and additional manual searches in five scientific journals. A content analysis of 17 qualitative articles was conducted. Results The analysis revealed one main theme: "Being an outsider at work" and two themes: "Cultural dissonance and Unfamiliar nursing practice. Two sub-themes emerged from the first theme; Loneliness and discrimination" and "Communication barriers". The second theme was based on the following two sub-themes: "Handling work-related stress" and "Role uncertainty and difficulties in decision-making". A better prepared and longer orientation period with continual clinical supervision including systematic reflection on practice experiences is needed to support foreign educated nurses in the transition period and strengthen their Patient Safety Competencies. Nurse Managers have an important role in ensuring the inclusion of foreign educated nurses and providing desirable working conditions.

TL;DR: Outcomes for gastric sleeve resection are nearly as good as they are for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and that these outcomes are durable, suggesting that the major health effects from bariatric surgery are related to inducing weight loss and controlling diabetes.
Abstract: Six years ago, when JAMA last published a theme issue on obesity, there was optimism that progress was being made in preventing and treating obesity.1 As time has passed, so too has the optimism, as reports continued to show that the prevalence of obesity was increasing2 and, most important, rapidly increasing in children.3 A year and a half ago, there was a call to reconsider obesity and view it in new ways with the hope of better managing this very consequential clinical problem.4 In response, JAMA has revisited obesity in the form of a theme issue. This issue of JAMA includes 5 Original Investigations about bariatric surgery. Despite many bariatric surgery publications, most studies are not definitive due to lack of complete or long-term follow-up.5 Relatively few randomized trials have been conducted and, of those, not many involve multiple surgeons or institutions. The 5 studies published in this week’s JAMA overcome some of these limitations.6-10 Three randomized clinical trials were performed in multiple centers, with surgery performed by several different physicians. Each trial presents 5-year outcome data with very little loss to follow-up. Two observational studies compared bariatric surgery outcomes with either specialized obesity management or usual care and also have 4to 5-year outcomes, with nearly complete follow-up. Three of the Original Investigations in this issue of JAMA provide important information about the laparoscopic gastric sleeve operation.6-8 This procedure is relatively easy to perform and has rapidly become one of the most commonly performed bariatric procedures, despite the lack of high-quality evidence to support its use. The articles in this issue demonstrate that outcomes for gastric sleeve resection (including survival, excess BMI or weight loss, and improvement of comorbidities) are nearly as good as they are for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and that these outcomes are durable. Despite Roux-en-Y gastric bypass being a more complicated and technically difficult operation to perform, long-term complication rates are about the same for the 2 procedures. Although laparoscopic sleeve resection has good outcomes, a substantial number of patients develop gastroesophageal reflux disease after the procedure.6,7 Considering all the evidence, it is clear that laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection is a reasonable approach for treating significant obesity. However, as discussed in an accompanying Editorial by Arterburn and Gupta,11 there is no clear way to decide whether to perform gastric sleeve resection or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Bariatric surgery results in substantial and sustained weight loss, and it is associated with other important health outcomes. Although bariatric surgery may improve mortality, the effect is small,8 whereas the effect on remission of type 2 diabetes is substantial. The benefits of weight loss surgery on other obesity-related comorbidities are less clear. In one of the observational studies in this issue of JAMA, patients who had undergone bariatric surgery, compared with patients in the control group who had been enrolled in a specialized medical treatment program, had reduced use of medications for hypertension and hyperlipidemia.10 In another observational study in this issue, patients who had undergone bariatric surgery did not have a reduction in medication used for hypertension and dyslipidemia.8 Intuitively, this difference in results makes sense because hypertension is common in nonobese patients, and statins have other benefits in addition to treating dyslipidemia. It is unlikely that patients who have lost weight following bariatric surgery would be able to discontinue these medications. This finding suggests that the major health effects from bariatric surgery are related to inducing weight loss and controlling diabetes. The benefit of surgically induced weight loss on other outcomes, such as sleep apnea and osteoarthritis, were not addressed in these studies and more information is needed about how these complications of obesity might respond to bariatric surgery. In an effort to reverse the inexorable rise in the rates of obesity, some communities have imposed a tax on sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) in an effort to reduce consumption of these products. Taxes are imposed on the distributors of SSBs, although it is not known if the distributors would absorb the cost or pass it on to consumers. As described by Cawley et al in a Research Letter in this issue of JAMA,12 SSB taxes imposed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, provided a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis. The Philadelphia airport is so large, it straddles 2 cities: 21 stores in the airport are in the city of Philadelphia and 10 stores are in the city of Tinicum. Only stores on the Philadelphia side were subject to the SSB tax. After the tax was imposed, SSB prices increased in all the stores but the increase was significantly higher in the stores subjected to the SSB tax, suggesting that taxes were being passed on to the consumer and that competitors not subject to the tax also, to a lesser degree, increased prices.12 These results are discouraging. In a related Viewpoint, Powell and Maciejewski13 discuss the economic implications of SSB taxes and how these taxes Viewpoints pages 221, 223, 225, 227, 229, and 231

TL;DR: The authors of as discussed by the authors pointed out that the lasting impact of the upheaval in Italian politics in the early 1990s could still be felt in the decade of economic recession, but there were also new challenges prompted by a crisis that had its roots in international financial contagion and which unravelled under the shadow of both recession and austerity.
Abstract: Italian politics have undergone momentous change in the 2007–2017 decade under the impact of the eurozone crisis, whose peak in 2011–2013 could be equated to the earlier watershed years of 1992–1994. The lasting impact of the upheaval in Italian politics in the early 1990s could still be felt in the decade of economic recession, but there were also new challenges prompted by a crisis that had its roots in international financial contagion and which unravelled under the shadow of both recession and austerity. The changes were of an economic, social, cultural, institutional, policy-oriented and political nature. If one central quintessentially political theme stands out by the end of this decade it is the apparent exhaustion of the quest for bipolarisation that was initiated in the early 1990s.

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the Theme and Thematic progression patterns in students’ recount text in a state vocational school in Bandung This study employs a descriptive-qualitative research design The data were obtained from a collection of students’ texts This study uses the theory of Theme system developed by Halliday (1994) and the theory of Thematic progression proposed by Eggins (2004) as the framework to analyze the data The findings showed that the Theme and Thematic progression supports the character of Recount text written by the students to some extents: the Topical Theme represents the students’ ability to deliver what the text is about, the Interpersonal Theme helps students declare their personal comments, while the Textual Theme showed the students’ ability to develop the logical relationship between clauses and make their texts more cohesive and coherent In terms of thematic progression patterns, the Theme Reiteration pattern signposts that the students tend to make the text focus by repeating the same element as Themes; the Zig Zag pattern showed that the students introduce newly information by promoting the Rheme in a clause to the Theme in the subsequent clause, and the Multiple Theme pattern specifies that the students develop the texts well according to the prior plan before writing those ideas in the text

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an overview of the debates on the proactive role of live performance audiences in the context of the Be SpectACTive! workshop in Barcelona, 2016, where the participants developed their vision of what participation means in culture, each in his/her field and disciplinary environment.
Abstract: This book gives an important place to the controversies surrounding the question of participation in the cultural and artistic fields. This debate gathers researchers who have developed through their work an original and documented point of view on the issue. Then, it brings together those who have been active in the Conference “The Proactive Role of Live Performance Audiences” (Barcelona, November 2016). The publication proposes a dynamic state of the considerations that accompany the Be SpectACTive! project (funded by the EU program Creative Europe). The book is structured in two parts. The first contains an introductory theoretical chapter by the two editors (Lluis Bonet and Emmanuel Negrier) followed by the contributions of researchers who develop their vision of what participation means in culture, each one in his/her field and disciplinary environment. Jean-Louis Fabiani analyzes participation in its historical context and shows the possible resulting sociological and political ambivalence. Franco Bianchini and Alice Borchi highlight the forms that participation policies in contemporary cities can take. Dafne Muntanyola-Saura focuses on ethics and aesthetics of participation in the field of visual arts. These three different contributions enrich our vision and open up a critical perspective. The second part of the book extends this perspective to seven main goals of participation in the cultural sector. Each theme was proposed to be discussed during specific workshops at the Barcelona conference on the proactive role of live performance audiences. We commissioned to the conductors of each session to write their own reflections on the issue. At the same time, the synthesis of the debates was made by a second group of experts. These are the titles of the seven workshop sessions and the names of the authors in order of appearance: "Artistic quality and audience empowerment" by Jaroslava Tomanova and Giada Calvano; "Risks and opportunities of active spectatorship from a management perspective" by Giuliana Ciancio and Ricardo Alvarez; "The interactive role of participatory creative residencies" by Felix Dupin-Meynard, Bruno Maccari and Rafael Valenzuela; "The challenges of artistic programming with active spectators" by Luca Ricci, Ricardo Alvarez and Janina Juarez Pinzon; "Prosumer Experiences in Performing Arts" by Luisella Carnelli, Jaume Colomer, Giada Calvano and Janina Juarez Pinzon; "The organizational challenge of audience development and engagement" by Alessandro Bollo, Bruno Maccari and Kinga Szemessy and, finally, "Real democratization: involving audiences with different cultural capital" by Arturo Rodriguez Morato and Rafael Valenzuela. In conclusion, Ben Walmsley, one of the very first thinkers about participation in the cultural sector, will provide his original contribution to this debate.

TL;DR: In an era defined by insecurity, uncertainty, and increasing anxieties, ontological security has proven to be a fruitful lens for analyzing world politics as discussed by the authors, and the work in this special issue joins other recent compilations, contributing to the growing research agenda on ontology and insecurity in world politics.
Abstract: In an era defined by insecurity, uncertainty, and increasing anxieties, ontological security has proven to be a fruitful lens for analyzing world politics. This Special Issue joins other recent compilations, contributing to the growing research agenda on ontological security and insecurity in world politics. The articles herein conceptualize and apply ontological security at the international, transnational, and state levels, oriented around the broad themes of conflict and community. Behravesh and Greve draw on ontological security to shed critical light on the well-established IR concepts of revisionist states and security communities. Ejdus focuses attention on critical situations and eruptions of ontological insecurity at the collective level. Krolikowski and Solomon home in on the individual, examining how the state and how transnational affective currents play roles in ontological (in)security. Stepping back and reflecting on the range of insights from these diverse contributions, a powerful unifying theme emerges, namely, the sense that the search for ontological security can never be fulfilled but is a constant quest for something that will always, at every level, from the personal to the world political, remain out of reach: the complete, whole Self.

TL;DR: In this article, the pervasiveness of storytelling in theme parks and the theme park as a distinct narrative medium is examined. And the characteristics of theme park storytelling, how it has changed over time, and what makes the medium unique.
Abstract: This dissertation examines the pervasiveness of storytelling in theme parks and establishes the theme park as a distinct narrative medium. It traces the characteristics of theme park storytelling, how it has changed over time, and what makes the medium unique. This was accomplished using a mixed methods approach drawing data from interviews with creative professionals, archival research, fieldwork, and an analysis of more than eight hundred narrative attractions. The survey of narrative attractions revealed the most common narrative expressions to be dark rides and stage shows. Source material tends to be cultural tales (legends, fairy tales) or intellectual properties (generally films). Throughout major periods and world regions, setting, scenes, and visual storytelling are the most ubiquitous narrative devices. Three dozen techniques and technologies are detailed in this project. Significant impetuses for narrative change over time are the advent of technologies, formalization of the industry, explicit discourse on storytelling, formation of design philosophies, and general convergence of media. There are at least a half dozen key distinctions in theme park narratives compared with other mediums: dimensionality, scale, communality, brevity, a combinatory aspect, and a reiterative nature. Also significant is that creative professionals view themselves as storytellers, purposefully design with narrative systems, embed them in spaces, and participate in public dialogue surrounding narrative and design principles. This study was initiated to expand the literature on emerging media and narratives within the Texts and Technology approach and to fill a gap in the scholarship, as designer standpoint is rarely considered in analysis. This is the first large-scale study of storytelling in the global theme park industry. It uses underrepresented creative voices as participants and recognizes their contributions as storytellers. Finally, the project lays the groundwork for future inquiries into theme parks as storytellers and spatial narrative mediums.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the current state of evidence supporting factors influencing patient experience (both positive and negative) in outpatient specialist encounters that are applicable to general and surgical dermatology.
Abstract: The relationship between patient experience and health care quality has generated significant interest in the patient experience measure. However, it is challenging to find information on how to improve one's patient experience score because scientific data on this topic are weak or lacking, and suggestions provided by scoring vendors are often overgeneralized and not specialty-specific. This review will focus on the current state of evidence supporting factors influencing patient experience (both positive and negative) in outpatient specialist encounters that are applicable to general and surgical dermatology. The literature review includes research from multiple medical specialties. Identified studies were based on title and abstract and sourced from Medline, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Medical subject headings terms in PubMed and Ovid Medline included "dermatology/standards," "patient satisfaction," "surgery/standards," "physician-patient relations," "surgery," "practice management," "practice management, medical," "office management," "patient experience," "practice guidelines," "best practice," and "outpatient surgery." During this review, three main themes affecting the patient experience emerged: communication, time, and access. Of the three, communication appears to be the dominant theme affecting the patient experience measure.

TL;DR: A review of the literature in other languages and including books on mathematics textbook research and development can be found in this paper, where the authors argue that mathematics textbooks as a theme of research have continued to receive rapidly growing attention internationally.
Abstract: The paper departs from research published in an earlier thematic issue published by ZDM Mathematics Education in 2013 on mathematics textbook research and development by presenting a review of the literature in other languages and including books. Overall, the paper provides a brief overview of the more recent development of research in this area since then. The paper argues that mathematics textbooks as a theme of research have continued to receive rapidly growing attention internationally by opening to new developments such as electronic resources, historical reflections and international comparisons.
