Limb proportions show developmental plasticity in response to embryo movement.
Andrea S. Pollard,B G Charlton,John R. Hutchinson,Thomas Gustafsson,Imelda M. McGonnell,James A. Timmons,Andrew A. Pitsillides +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that incubation temperature influences motility and limb bone growth in West African Dwarf crocodiles, producing altered limb proportions which may, influence post-hatching performance and provide new insights into how environmental factors can be integrated to influence cellular activity in growing bones and ultimately gross limb morphology, to generate phenotypic variation during prenatal development.
Journal ArticleDOI
An atlas of genetic influences on osteoporosis in humans and mice

Williams,J. H. Duncan Bassett,David M. Evans,David M. Evans,J. Brent Richards +66 more
TL;DR: This genetic atlas provides evidence linking associated SNPs to causal genes, offers new insight into osteoporosis pathophysiology, and highlights opportunities for drug development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of 153 new loci associated with heel bone mineral density and functional involvement of GPC6 in osteoporosis
John P. Kemp,John P. Kemp,John A. Morris,Carolina Medina-Gomez,Vincenzo Forgetta,Nicole M. Warrington,Nicole M. Warrington,Scott E. Youlten,Scott E. TL;DR: The results implicate GPC6 as a novel determinant of BMD, and also identify abnormal skeletal phenotypes in knockout mice associated with a further 100 prioritized genes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Noncanonical thyroid hormone signaling mediates cardiometabolic effects in vivo.
G. Sebastian Hönes,Helena Rakov,John G. Logan,Xiao Hui Liao,Eugenie Werbenko,Andrea S. Pollard,Stine M. Præstholm,Majken S. Siersbæk,Eddy Rijntjes,Janina Gassen,Sören Latteyer,Kathrin Engels,Karl Heinz Strucksberg,Petra Kleinbongard,Denise Zwanziger,Jan Rozman,Valerie Gailus-Durner,Helmut Fuchs,Martin Hrabé de Angelis,Ludger Klein-Hitpass,Josef Köhrle,David L. Armstrong,Lars Grøntved,J. H. Duncan Bassett,Graham R. Williams,Samuel Refetoff,Dagmar Führer,Lars C. Moeller +27 more
TL;DR: In vivo evidence is provided that noncanonical TR signaling exerts physiologically important cardiometabolic effects that are distinct from canonical actions, challenging the current paradigm that in vivo physiological TH action is mediated exclusively via regulation of gene transcription at the nuclear level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cartilage to bone transitions in health and disease
Katherine Staines,Andrea S. Pollard,Imelda M. McGonnell,Colin Farquharson,Andrew A. Pitsillides +4 more
TL;DR: Specific scenarios in which the redeployment of these embryonic processes may contribute to disease development are highlighted, with the foresight that deciphering those mechanisms regulating pathological changes and loss of cartilage stability will aid future research into effective disease-modifying therapies.
