Sustainable economic and industrial growth requires safe, sustainable resources of energy. For the future re-arrangement of a sustainable economy to biological raw materials, completely new approaches in research and development, production, and economy are necessary. The ‘first-generation’ biofuels appear unsustainable because of the potential stress that their production places on food commodities. For organic chemicals and materials these needs to follow a biorefinery model under environmentally sustainable conditions. Where these operate at present, their product range is largely limited to simple materials (i.e. cellulose, ethanol, and biofuels). Second generation biorefineries need to build on the need for sustainable chemical products through modern and proven green chemical technologies such as bioprocessing including pyrolysis, Fisher Tropsch, and other catalytic processes in order to make more complex molecules and materials on which a future sustainable society will be based. This review focus on cost effective technologies and the processes to convert biomass into useful liquid biofuels and bioproducts, with particular focus on some biorefinery concepts based on different feedstocks aiming at the integral utilization of these feedstocks for the production of value added chemicals.

A new and safe approach to (N-vinylimino)phosphoranes

Roasting of high erucic mustard (HEM) seed has been reported to give a typical flavor and increase the oxidative stability of the extracted oil. A potent radical scavenging compound was successfully isolated from roasted HEM seed oil in a single-step chromatographic separation using an amino solid-phase extraction column. Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry spectra revealed the compound as 2,6-dimethoxy-4-vinylphenol (generally known as canolol), and its identity was fully confirmed by chemical synthesis. The formation of canolol during roasting was compared among HEM varieties (Brassica juncea, B. juncea var. oriental, Brassica nigra, and Sinapis alba) together with a low erucic rapeseed variety. HEM varieties were shown to produce less than one-third of canolol compared to rapeseed at similar roasting conditions. This observation was linked to a lower free sinapic acid content together with a lower loss of sinapic acid derivatives in the HEM varieties compared to rapeseed. Around 50% of the canolol formed in the roasted seed was shown to be extracted in the oil. Roasting of HEM seed before oil extraction was found to be a beneficial step to obtain canolol-enriched oil, which could improve the oxidative stability.

Synthesis of β-, γ-, δ-, ..., ω-halogenated ketones and aldehydes.

Stenusine [1-ethyl-3-(2-methylbutyl)piperidine], the spreading agent of Stenus comma, was synthesized by a six-step sequence in 21 % overall yield from acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde was converted into the corresponding N-tert-butyl aldimine, which was sequentially alkylated via its 1-azaallylic anion with 1-bromo-2-methylbutane and 1-bromo-3-chloropropane. The resulting delta-chloro aldimine was hydrolyzed into the delta-chloro aldehyde, which was converted into the corresponding N-ethyl aldimine. The latter labile delta-chloro aldimine was cyclized with lithium aluminum hydride to afford stenusine. The 1-tert-butyl analogue of stenusine was synthesized using an analogous route.
