Sustainable economic and industrial growth requires safe, sustainable resources of energy. For the future re-arrangement of a sustainable economy to biological raw materials, completely new approaches in research and development, production, and economy are necessary. The ‘first-generation’ biofuels appear unsustainable because of the potential stress that their production places on food commodities. For organic chemicals and materials these needs to follow a biorefinery model under environmentally sustainable conditions. Where these operate at present, their product range is largely limited to simple materials (i.e. cellulose, ethanol, and biofuels). Second generation biorefineries need to build on the need for sustainable chemical products through modern and proven green chemical technologies such as bioprocessing including pyrolysis, Fisher Tropsch, and other catalytic processes in order to make more complex molecules and materials on which a future sustainable society will be based. This review focus on cost effective technologies and the processes to convert biomass into useful liquid biofuels and bioproducts, with particular focus on some biorefinery concepts based on different feedstocks aiming at the integral utilization of these feedstocks for the production of value added chemicals.

Chitosan chemistry and pharmaceutical perspectives.

An industrial project was developed to optimize the biodiesel production from crude palm oil. This process was developed for a one ton scale application on the palm oil production facility in equatorial Africa, to be used on the plantation to provide fuel for the fleet of the company. Because of the specific conditions (crude palm oil as starting material, application in technologically difficult conditions), it was essential for the developed procedure to be robust and simple, and to use minimum amounts of chemicals. The process was optimised on lab-scale in 2005 and 2006, scaled up in the following year, and is since then successfully applied as intended on the palm oil plantation. The produced biodiesel is used pure, without mixing with diesel fuel and without additives. After several years of continuous use, no negative effects were noticed on the engines. The process efficiency and durability are therefore confirmed.

Tri- and tetra-alkylimidazoles are quaternised into their corresponding ionic liquids with dimethyl carbonate. Upon metathesis of the obtained methyl carbonate salts, only gaseous by-products are generated. These methyl carbonate salts can be transformed into hydrogen carbonate salts by reaction with water. The salts containing a carbonate anion are very alkaline, which results in a hydrogen/deuterium exchange on the anion and some of the cation protons, depending on the substitution. Moreover, the crystalline 1-ethyl-3,4,5-trimethylimidazolium hydrogen carbonate formed carboxylate species upon dissolution. In particular, the carboxylate was able to regenerate the carbene and in the presence of chloroform, this led to the formation of the chloride salt.
