Facilitation in plant communities: the past, the present, and the future
Rob W. Brooker,Fernando T. Maestre,Ragan M. Callaway,Christopher L. Lortie,Lohengrin A. Cavieres,Georges Kunstler,Pierre Liancourt,Katja Tielbörger,Justin M. J. Travis,Fabien Anthelme,Cristina Armas,Lluís Coll,Emmanuel Corcket,Sylvain Delzon,Estelle Forey,Zaal Kikvidze,Johan Olofsson,Francisco I. Pugnaire,Constanza L. Quiroz,Patrick Saccone,Katja Schiffers,Merav Seifan,Blaize Touzard,Richard Michalet +23 more
TL;DR: There is substantial scope for exploring indirect facilitative effects in plant communities, including their impacts on diversity and evolution, and future studies should connect the degree of non-transitivity in plant competitive networks to community diversity and facilitative promotion of species coexistence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plant functional traits have globally consistent effects on competition
Georges Kunstler,Georges Kunstler,Daniel S. Falster,David A. Coomes,Francis K. C. Hui,Robert M. Kooyman,Robert M. Kooyman,Daniel C. Laughlin,Lourens Poorter,Mark C. Vanderwel,Ghislain Vieilledent,S. Joseph Wright,Masahiro Aiba,Christopher Baraloto,Christopher Baraloto,John P. Caspersen,J. Hans C. Cornelissen,Sylvie Gourlet-Fleury,Marc Hanewinkel,Bruno Hérault,Jens Kattge,Hiroko Kurokawa,Yusuke Onoda,Josep Peñuelas,Hendrik Poorter,María Uriarte,Sarah J. Richardson,Paloma Ruiz-Benito,Paloma Ruiz-Benito,I-Fang Sun,Göran Ståhl,Nathan G. Swenson,Jill Thompson,Bertil Westerlund,Christian Wirth,Miguel A. Zavala,Hongcheng Zeng,Jess K. Zimmerman,Niklaus E. Zimmermann,Mark Westoby +39 more
TL;DR: Traits generate trade-offs between performance with competition versus performance without competition, a fundamental ingredient in the classical hypothesis that the coexistence of plant species is enabled via differentiation in their successional strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Competitive interactions between forest trees are driven by species' trait hierarchy, not phylogenetic or functional similarity: implications for forest community assembly.
Georges Kunstler,Sébastien Lavergne,Benoît Courbaud,Wilfried Thuiller,Ghislain Vieilledent,Niklaus E. Zimmermann,Jens Kattge,David A. Coomes +7 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that functional and phylogenetic convergence in local tree community might be due to competition-sorting species with different competitive abilities and not only environmental filtering as commonly assumed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intraspecific trait variability mediates the response of subalpine grassland communities to extreme drought events
Vincent Jung,Cécile H. Albert,Cécile H. Albert,Cyrille Violle,Cyrille Violle,Georges Kunstler,Grégory Loucougaray,Thomas Spiegelberger +7 more
TL;DR: New evidence is reported that intraspecific variability can be a more important driver of the short-term functional response of plant communities following an extreme drought.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disentangling Biodiversity and Climatic Determinants of Wood Production
Montserrat Vilà,Amparo Carrillo-Gavilán,Jordi Vayreda,Harald Bugmann,Jonas Fridman,Wojciech Grodzki,Josephine Haase,Josephine Haase,Georges Kunstler,Mart-Jan Schelhaas,Antoni Trasobares +10 more
TL;DR: The analysis is the first to find a local scale positive relationship between tree species richness and tree wood production occurring across a continent, and the results strongly support incorporating the role of biodiversity in management and policy plans for forest carbon sequestration.
