Gulcher,Unnur Thorsteinsdottir,Augustine Kong,Kari Stefansson +79 more
TL;DR: Results from eight case-control groups demonstrate that this variant in TCF2 (HNF1β), a gene known to be mutated in individuals with maturity-onset diabetes of the young type 5, confers protection against type 2 diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Common sequence variants in the LOXL1 gene confer susceptibility to exfoliation glaucoma.
Gudmar Thorleifsson,Kristinn P. Magnusson,Patrick Sulem,G. Bragi Walters,Daniel F. Gudbjartsson,Hreinn Stefansson,Thorlakur Jonsson,Adalbjorg Jonasdottir,Aslaug Jonasdottir,Gerdur Stefansdottir,Gisli Masson,Gudmundur A. Hardarson,H. Petursson,Arsaell Arnarsson,Mehdi Motallebipour,Ola Wallerman,Claes Wadelius,Jeffrey R. Gulcher,Unnur Thorsteinsdottir,Augustine Kong,Fridbert Jonasson,Kari Stefansson +21 more
TL;DR: Two nonsynonymous SNPs in exon 1 of the gene LOXL1 explain the association with glaucoma, and the data suggest that they confer risk of XFG mainly through exfoliation syndrome (XFS).
Journal ArticleDOI
The ecology of Lake Myvatn and the River Laxá: Variation in space and time
Árni Einarsson,Gerdur Stefansdottir,Gerdur Stefansdottir,Helgi Jóhannesson,Jón S. Ólafsson,Gísli Már Gíslason,Isamu Wakana,Gudni Gudbergsson,Arnthor Gardarsson +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of volcanic activity on the biota of Lake Myvatn and the outflowing River Laxa and found that the most prominent fluctuations, those of the chironomid Tanytarsus gracilentus seem to be driven by interactions between species and its sediment resources.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gudmundsson +30 more
TL;DR: The 2014-2015 Barðarbunga eruption was the largest in Iceland for more than 200 years, producing 1.6 ± 0.3 km3 of lava.
Journal ArticleDOI
Do submersed plants enhance microbial activity in sediment
TL;DR: Regardless of the carbon supply, Elodea and Myriophyllum did neither enhance the bacterial activity nor the microbial biomass in the sediment, whereas Lobelia had a positive influence on both the variables, as well as on denitrification potential within deeper root zone.
