A brain-specific microRNA regulates dendritic spine development
Gerhard Schratt,Fabian Tuebing,Elizabeth A. Nigh,Elizabeth A. Nigh,Christina G. Kane,Christina G. Kane,Mary E. Sabatini,Michael A. Kiebler,Michael E. Greenberg,Michael E. Greenberg +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a brain-specific microRNA, miR-134>, is localized to the synapto-dendritic compartment of rat hippocampal neurons and negatively regulates the size of dendritic spines—postsynaptic sites of excitatory synaptic transmission.
Journal ArticleDOI
Potentiation of serum response factor activity by a family of myocardin-related transcription factors.
Da-Zhi Wang,Shijie Li,Dirk Hockemeyer,Lillian B. Sutherland,Zhigao Wang,Gerhard Schratt,James A. Richardson,Alfred Nordheim,Eric N. Olson +8 more
TL;DR: Two myocardin-related transcription factors, A and B, that also interact with SRF and stimulate its transcriptional activity are described, which comprise a previously uncharacterized family of SRF cofactors with the potential to modulate SRF target genes in a wide range of tissues.
Journal ArticleDOI
A functional screen implicates microRNA-138-dependent regulation of the depalmitoylation enzyme APT1 in dendritic spine morphogenesis
Gabriele Siegel,Gregor Obernosterer,Roberto Fiore,Martin Oehmen,Silvia Bicker,Mette Christensen,Mette Christensen,Sharof Khudayberdiev,Philipp F Leuschner,Clara J L Busch,Christina G. Kane,Katja Hübel,Frank J. Dekker,Christian Hedberg,Balamurugan Rengarajan,Carsten Drepper,Carsten Drepper,Herbert Waldmann,Sakari Kauppinen,Sakari Kauppinen,Michael E. Greenberg,Andreas Draguhn,Marc Rehmsmeier,Marc Rehmsmeier,Javier Martinez,Gerhard Schratt +25 more
TL;DR: The results uncover a previously unknown miRNA-dependent mechanism in neurons and demonstrate a previously unrecognized complexity of mi RNA-dependent control of dendritic spine morphogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
microRNAs at the synapse
TL;DR: Recent evidence points to a widespread role for neural miRNAs at various stages of synaptic development, including dendritogenesis, synapse formation and synapse maturation, and studies from invertebrates indicate that mi RNAs might contribute to the control of synapse function and plasticity in the adult.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterizing Light-Regulated Retinal MicroRNAs Reveals Rapid Turnover as a Common Property of Neuronal MicroRNAs
Jacek Krol,Volker Busskamp,Ilona Markiewicz,Michael B. Stadler,Sebastian Ribi,Jens Richter,Jens Duebel,Silvia Bicker,Hans Jörg Fehling,Dirk Schübeler,Thomas G. Oertner,Gerhard Schratt,Miriam Bibel,Botond Roska,Witold Filipowicz +14 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that microRNA metabolism in neurons is higher than in most other cells types and linked to neuronal activity, and that microRNAs in retinal neurons decay much faster than micro RNAs in nonneuronal cells.
