Although gold is the subject of one of the most ancient themes of investigation in science, its renaissance now leads to an exponentially increasing number of publications, especially in the context of emerging nanoscience and nanotechnology with nanoparticles and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). We will limit the present review to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), also called gold colloids. AuNPs are the most stable metal nanoparticles, and they present fascinating aspects such as their assembly of multiple types involving materials science, the behavior of the individual particles, size-related electronic, magnetic and optical properties (quantum size effect), and their applications to catalysis and biology. Their promises are in these fields as well as in the bottom-up approach of nanotechnology, and they will be key materials and building block in the 21st century. Whereas the extraction of gold started in the 5th millennium B.C. near Varna (Bulgaria) and reached 10 tons per year in Egypt around 1200-1300 B.C. when the marvelous statue of Touthankamon was constructed, it is probable that “soluble” gold appeared around the 5th or 4th century B.C. in Egypt and China. Since the discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene in 2004, research on ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has grown exponentially in the fields of condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Highlighting their compelling physical, chemical, electronic, and optical properties, as well as their various potential applications, in this Review, we summarize the state-of-art progress on the ultrathin 2D nanomaterials with a particular emphasis on their recent advances. First, we introduce the unique advances on ultrathin 2D nanomaterials, followed by the description of their composition and crystal structures. The assortments of their synthetic methods are then summarized, including insights on their advantages and limitations, alongside some recommendations on suitable characterization techniques. Recent Advances in Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials

Electrochemical reduction of newly synthesised bis(fulvalene)diiron derivatives, [Fe2(C10H8)(C10H8–nRn)](R = CClCHCHO, n= 1 or 3), in NBu4ClO4–MeCN leads to the deposition of stable electroactive films on glassy carbon and indium–tin oxide coated glass electrodes. The difference in the number of substituents affects the electropolymerization reaction rate and physical and electrochemical properties of the polymer films. The electrode films control the reversibility in redox reactions of organic and organometallic electron acceptors such as p-benzoquinones and a cobaltocenium salt in acetonitrile.

Mechanism of Corrosion Inhibition with Bismuth Compounds for Iron, Nickel and Zine in Acid Solutions

Two π-conjugated dimethyldihydropyrene (DHP)-bis-terpyridine ligands (2 and 3) were prepared, in which two terpyridine moieties were connected at the 4 and 9 positions of DHP (1) via phenyl and ethynyl linkers, respectively. The nature of the π-conjugated linkers influenced the valence orbitals of the DHP moiety, which shifted the redox potentials of the DHP moiety and the absorption spectra. In 3 with an ethynyl linker, the redox potentials of the DHP moiety were shifted in the positive direction and the absorption band was largely red-shifted compared with 1. In 2 with a phenyl linker, the shifts in the redox potentials of the DHP moiety and in the absorption band were moderate. These results were supported by valence orbital energies calculated using time-dependent density functional theory, which enabled the assignment of the four main transitions in each spectrum for the first time. The fluorescence intensity of 3 was larger than that of 2, which was photoisomerisable. Two dinuclear Ru(bis-terpyridine) complexes (4 and 5) were prepared from 2 and 3, and their redox and photochemical properties were investigated.

π-Conjugation modification of photochromic and redox-active dimethyldihydropyrene by phenyl- and ethynyl-terpyridines and Ru(bis-terpyridine) complexes

Far radiation field emitted from an optical fiber and its application to holography

Electrochemical pre-doping of a silicon electrode was investigated to create a new class of rechargeable battery with higher energy density. The electrochemical reaction during pre-doping formed a high-quality solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the surface of silicon particles, which improved the charge and discharge cycle life with a small irreversible capacity. The surface composition of the pre-doped silicon particles was characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), solid state magic-angle-spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Pressurization promoted SEI growth and lithium binding with silicon to form Li15Si4 accompanied by the reductive reaction product of Li2CO3 originated from electrolyte. The Li15Si4 was highly stable when the silicon anode was used in a full cell, thus resulting in a silicon anode with a long cycle life.
