TL;DR: Though the threat of extinction is increasing, overall declines would have been worse in the absence of conservation, and current conservation efforts remain insufficient to offset the main drivers of biodiversity loss in these groups.

Generation lengths of the world's birds and their implications for extinction risk
Jeremy P. Bird,Jeremy P. Bird,Rob W. Martin,H. Resit Akçakaya,H. Resit Akçakaya,James J. Gilroy,Ian J. Burfield,Stephen T. Garnett,Andy Symes,Joseph Taylor,Çağan H. Şekercioğlu,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Stuart H. M. Butchart +12 more
TL;DR: Accurate generation lengths for all birds will improve assessment of extinction within the group, and strengthen future extinction risk assessments and augment key databases of avian life history and trait data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Data Deficient birds on the IUCN Red List: What don’t we know and why does it matter?
TL;DR: It is speculated that of the remaining Data Deficient bird species, just 14% may prove to be threatened, and greater attention should be given to documenting data quality and uncertainty for Red List assessments of threatened and non-threatened species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prioritizing Islands for the Eradication of Invasive Vertebrates in the United Kingdom Overseas Territories
Jeffrey O. Dawson,Steffen Oppel,Richard J. Cuthbert,Nick D. Holmes,Jeremy P. Bird,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Dena R. Spatz,Bernie R. Tershy +7 more
TL;DR: This work identified the top 25 priority islands for invasive species eradication that together would benefit extant populations of 155 native species including 45 globally threatened species and identified the 5 most valuable islands.
Journal ArticleDOI
Integrating spatially explicit habitat projections into extinction risk assessments: a reassessment of Amazonian avifauna incorporating projected deforestation
Jeremy P. Bird,Graeme M. Buchanan,Alexander C. Lees,Rob P. Clay,Pedro Ferreira Develey,Itala Yépez,Stuart H. M. Butchart +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a systematic assessment of extinction risk based on projected population declines derived from spatially explicit habitat projections for any taxonomic group at a regional scale, to use the outputs to ascertain the efficacy of an existing protected area network in covering species of conservation concern, and identify gaps therein.
