Over the past decade, comprehensive sequencing efforts have revealed the genomic landscapes of common forms of human cancer. For most cancer types, this landscape consists of a small number of “mountains” (genes altered in a high percentage of tumors) and a much larger number of “hills” (genes altered infrequently). To date, these studies have revealed ~140 genes that, when altered by intragenic mutations, can promote or “drive” tumorigenesis. A typical tumor contains two to eight of these “driver gene” mutations; the remaining mutations are passengers that confer no selective growth advantage. Driver genes can be classified into 12 signaling pathways that regulate three core cellular processes: cell fate, cell survival, and genome maintenance. A better understanding of these pathways is one of the most pressing needs in basic cancer research. Even now, however, our knowledge of cancer genomes is sufficient to guide the development of more effective approaches for reducing cancer morbidity and mortality.

Cancer Genome Landscapes

Metamaterials, artificial electromagnetic media that are structured on the subwavelength scale, were initially suggested for the negative-index 'superlens'. Later metamaterials became a paradigm for engineering electromagnetic space and controlling propagation of waves: the field of transformation optics was born. The research agenda is now shifting towards achieving tunable, switchable, nonlinear and sensing functionalities. It is therefore timely to discuss the emerging field of metadevices where we define the devices as having unique and useful functionalities that are realized by structuring of functional matter on the subwavelength scale. In this Review we summarize research on photonic, terahertz and microwave electromagnetic metamaterials and metadevices with functionalities attained through the exploitation of phase-change media, semiconductors, graphene, carbon nanotubes and liquid crystals. The Review also encompasses microelectromechanical metadevices, metadevices engaging the nonlinear and quantum response of superconductors, electrostatic and optomechanical forces and nonlinear metadevices incorporating lumped nonlinear components.

From metamaterials to metadevices.

Metamaterials are composed of periodic subwavelength metal/dielectric structures that resonantly couple to the electric and/or magnetic components of the incident electromagnetic fields, exhibiting properties that are not found in nature. This class of micro- and nano-structured artificial media have attracted great interest during the past 15 years and yielded ground-breaking electromagnetic and photonic phenomena. However, the high losses and strong dispersion associated with the resonant responses and the use of metallic structures, as well as the difficulty in fabricating the micro- and nanoscale 3D structures, have hindered practical applications of metamaterials. Planar metamaterials with subwavelength thickness, or metasurfaces, consisting of single-layer or few-layer stacks of planar structures, can be readily fabricated using lithography and nanoprinting methods, and the ultrathin thickness in the wave propagation direction can greatly suppress the undesirable losses. Metasurfaces enable a spatially varying optical response (e.g. scattering amplitude, phase, and polarization), mold optical wavefronts into shapes that can be designed at will, and facilitate the integration of functional materials to accomplish active control and greatly enhanced nonlinear response. This paper reviews recent progress in the physics of metasurfaces operating at wavelengths ranging from microwave to visible. We provide an overview of key metasurface concepts such as anomalous reflection and refraction, and introduce metasurfaces based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and Huygens' metasurfaces, as well as their use in wavefront shaping and beam forming applications, followed by a discussion of polarization conversion in few-layer metasurfaces and their related properties. An overview of dielectric metasurfaces reveals their ability to realize unique functionalities coupled with Mie resonances and their low ohmic losses. We also describe metasurfaces for wave guidance and radiation control, as well as active and nonlinear metasurfaces. Finally, we conclude by providing our opinions of opportunities and challenges in this rapidly developing research field.

A comparative investigation on the microstructural features in Ti-6Al-4Me(Cr,Mo) alloys of annealing conditions

The thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) behaviors of spray-deposited SiCp-reinforced Al-Si alloy were investigated in terms of the size of Si particles and the Si content. Thermomechanical fatigue experiments were conducted in the temperature range of 150-400°C. The cyclic response behavior indicated that the continuous cyclic softening was exhibited for all materials, and the increase in SiC particles size and Si content aggravated the softening degree, which was attributed to dislocation generation due to differential thermal contraction at the Al matrix/Si phase interface or Al matrix/SiC particle interface. Meanwhile, the TMF life and stress amplitude of SiCp/Al-7Si composites were greater than those of Al-7Si alloy, and increased with the increasing SiC particle size, which was associated with “load sharing” of the direct strengthening mechanism. The stress amplitude of 4.5μmSiCp/Al-Si composite increased as the Si content increased; however, the influence of Si content on the TMF life was not so significant. The TMF failure mechanism revealed that the crack mainly initiated at the agglomeration of small-particulate SiC and the breakage of large-particulate SiC, and the broken primary Si and the exfoliated eutectic Si accelerated the crack propagation.

Thermomechanical Fatigue Behavior of Spray-Deposited SiCp/Al-Si Composite Applied in the High-Speed Railway Brake Disc

In this paper, modulation formats of M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)- and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) could be recognized autonomously in visible light communication (VLC) systems, by using higher order statistics (HOS). Fourth-order cumulants are applied as the decision criterion and the HOS method's correct decision probability is investigated by Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation.

Modulation format recognition in visible light communications based on higher order statistics

Terahertz (THz) waves are extremely sensitive to water content and biological composition (proteins, genes, and metabolites), which are the key regulator of cancer development. Hence, the application of THz spectroscopy and imaging is promising in the field of biomedicine, especially in cancer diagnosis. Currently, the diagnosis of cancer patients (including tumor borders, tumor stage, etc.) mainly rely on optical microscope observation of pathological slices. The preparation of the slices is complicated and time consuming, and the microscopic field of view is small, which cannot effectively guide the precise removal of the tumor during the operation in time. To solve this problem, a label-free real-time high-resolution near-field THz spectroscopy imaging technique was developed. In this study, we successfully apply this technique to the oral tissue. Compared with conventional point-by-point scanning terahertz time-domain spectroscopy imaging, this technique can exhibit a real-time imaging rate (as high as 20 frames/s at 512 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} 1024 pixels) and a field of view approximately 5 mm in diameter with a spatial resolution up to \ensuremath{\lambda}/10 at 1 THz in near-field condition. The experimental results show that the terahertz spectroscopic imaging in this paper can clearly detect and identify not only biological tissues with different components, but also normal and cancerous tissues, as well as tissues with the same composition but different slice directions. This work lays an experimental foundation for the application of THz spectroscopy imaging to rapid label-free intraoperative diagnosis, and it provides a basis for promoting the wide application of THz technology in the biomedical field.
