This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. New generation adsorbents for water treatment.

Large-scale electrolysis of water for hydrogen generation requires better catalysts to lower the kinetic barriers associated with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although most OER catalysts are based on crystalline mixed-metal oxides, high activities can also be achieved with amorphous phases. Methods for producing amorphous materials, however, are not typically amenable to mixed-metal compositions. We demonstrate that a low-temperature process, photochemical metal-organic deposition, can produce amorphous (mixed) metal oxide films for OER catalysis. The films contain a homogeneous distribution of metals with compositions that can be accurately controlled. The catalytic properties of amorphous iron oxide prepared with this technique are superior to those of hematite, whereas the catalytic properties of a-Fe100-y-zCoyNizOx are comparable to those of noble metal oxide catalysts currently used in commercial electrolyzers.

Photochemical Route for Accessing Amorphous Metal Oxide Materials for Water Oxidation Catalysis

Control of spontaneously emitted light lies at the heart of quantum optics. It is essential for diverse applications ranging from miniature lasers and light-emitting diodes, to single-photon sources for quantum information, and to solar energy harvesting. To explore such new quantum optics applications, a suitably tailored dielectric environment is required in which the vacuum fluctuations that control spontaneous emission can be manipulated. Photonic crystals provide such an environment: they strongly modify the vacuum fluctuations, causing the decay of emitted light to be accelerated or slowed down, to reveal unusual statistics, or to be completely inhibited in the ideal case of a photonic bandgap. Here we study spontaneous emission from semiconductor quantum dots embedded in inverse opal photonic crystals. We show that the spectral distribution and time-dependent decay of light emitted from excitons confined in the quantum dots are controlled by the host photonic crystal. Modified emission is observed over large frequency bandwidths of 10%, orders of magnitude larger than reported for resonant optical microcavities. Both inhibited and enhanced decay rates are observed depending on the optical emission frequency, and they are controlled by the crystals’ lattice parameter. Our experimental results provide a basis for all-solid-state dynamic control
of optical quantum systems.

Controlling the dynamics of spontaneous emission from quantum dots by photonic crystals

Abstract Background What if you fire a bullet and, like a boomerang, it comes back towards you after hitting the target, leaving no trace in the body. Case presentation A similar case was presented to us for an autopsy at the district mortuary, Aligarh, with a bullet unusually ricocheting within the thoracic cavity and taking almost path of incidence after grazing over the 3rd rib and coming out just closure to the entry wound towards the musketeer. The presence of stippling at both the entrance and exit wounds poses a challenge to interpreting the track of the injury. Conclusion Thorough and detailed examination at autopsy and crime-scene investigation revealed a strange ricochet event within the chest cavity.

Quantum dot solar cell structures have been theoretically analysed to study the impact of effective capture cross sections on quantum dot generation-recombination processes. The Poisson’s and continuity equation were solved self-consistently to obtain electrostatic potential, electron and hole carrier distribution, and electron filling of the QDs. The occupation probability of the QDs was used to estimate the effective capture cross-sections under different doping and bias condition.

Parameter Identification in Population Balance Models Using Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis

To characterize 20 genotypes of Psidium spp., observations were recorded for leaf blade length and width, petiole length, vein number, leaf surface area, leaf shape, leaf apex and base shape, upper and lower leaf surface colour, leaves colour during winters, leaf texture, pubescence and leaf lamina thickness which revealed significant variations among genotypes. Psidium chinensis was most diverse morphologically. Out of 20 decamer RAPD primers used four primers generated strong amplifications and resulted in polymorphic products; these were viz., OPA-03, OPA-05, OPS-04 and OPS-08. Percent polymorphism was 97.43% having a range of 87.5% to 100%. The average number of scoreable bands per primer was 9.75, while average number of polymorphic bands was 9.5. High polymorphism frequency was detected with all the selected primers. The similarity coefficient ranged from 0.42-0.83. The study showed that the genetic base of Indian guava can be rated as moderate to high diversity.

Morphological and molecular characterization of guava

The heavy-ion analysis is a single-event-effect (SEE) that produces a single-event-transient (SET) pulse of current. In this work, the analysis was done to observe the maximum impact of heavy-ions on a calibrated double-gate tunnel field-effect transistor (DG-TFET) taken as a device under test (DUT). The impact of heavy-ions on DG-TFET is compared with the previous work done for different TFETs. The ions are directed to strike vertically at five different positions; source, source-body junction, body, drain-body junction, and the drain region of DG-TFET. The analysis is done by observing the heavy-ion generation rate, heavy-ion charge density, and transient current for the strike of the ion at different locations on the DUT and at different linear energy transfer (LET) values with the help of physics-based numerical simulation. In the study, a detailed analysis of the transient current due to a heavy-ion strike in the body region is reported, and this transient current is compared with the existing reported data for different FETs. Bipolar gain of the device is also observed for a heavy-ion strike in the body region, which is an important parameter for analyzing SEE. The findings in this study can give a new insight into SEE in TFET devices and can also provide guidelines for radiation-hardened applications for TFET-based circuits.
