This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. New generation adsorbents for water treatment.

Large-scale electrolysis of water for hydrogen generation requires better catalysts to lower the kinetic barriers associated with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although most OER catalysts are based on crystalline mixed-metal oxides, high activities can also be achieved with amorphous phases. Methods for producing amorphous materials, however, are not typically amenable to mixed-metal compositions. We demonstrate that a low-temperature process, photochemical metal-organic deposition, can produce amorphous (mixed) metal oxide films for OER catalysis. The films contain a homogeneous distribution of metals with compositions that can be accurately controlled. The catalytic properties of amorphous iron oxide prepared with this technique are superior to those of hematite, whereas the catalytic properties of a-Fe100-y-zCoyNizOx are comparable to those of noble metal oxide catalysts currently used in commercial electrolyzers.

Photochemical Route for Accessing Amorphous Metal Oxide Materials for Water Oxidation Catalysis

Control of spontaneously emitted light lies at the heart of quantum optics. It is essential for diverse applications ranging from miniature lasers and light-emitting diodes, to single-photon sources for quantum information, and to solar energy harvesting. To explore such new quantum optics applications, a suitably tailored dielectric environment is required in which the vacuum fluctuations that control spontaneous emission can be manipulated. Photonic crystals provide such an environment: they strongly modify the vacuum fluctuations, causing the decay of emitted light to be accelerated or slowed down, to reveal unusual statistics, or to be completely inhibited in the ideal case of a photonic bandgap. Here we study spontaneous emission from semiconductor quantum dots embedded in inverse opal photonic crystals. We show that the spectral distribution and time-dependent decay of light emitted from excitons confined in the quantum dots are controlled by the host photonic crystal. Modified emission is observed over large frequency bandwidths of 10%, orders of magnitude larger than reported for resonant optical microcavities. Both inhibited and enhanced decay rates are observed depending on the optical emission frequency, and they are controlled by the crystals’ lattice parameter. Our experimental results provide a basis for all-solid-state dynamic control
of optical quantum systems.

Controlling the dynamics of spontaneous emission from quantum dots by photonic crystals

Introduction: In increasing number of countries over- weight and obesity represent a hovering menace and a rapidly growing threat to health of population. Childhood obesity plays a central role in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome which includes hyperinsulinemia, hyperlipidemia type 2 diabetes mellitus and increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Materials and methods: Analytical cross sectional study done to compare Body Mass Index ,Waist circumference and Blood pressure in school age children (10 -14yrs) of two schools belonging to Karad city. 470 children from English medium school(affluent group) and 481 children from Nagar Parishad school (non affluent group). The mesoscale population balance modelling (PBM) technique is widely used in predicting aggregation processes. The accuracy and efficiency of PBM depend on the formulation of its kernels. A model of the volume- and time-dependent one-dimensional aggregation kernel is developed for predicting the temporal evolution of the considered particulate system. To make the developed model physically relevant, the PBM model needs three unknown parameters as input: volume-dependency in collisions, collision frequency per particle and aggregation probability. For this, the microscale discrete element model (DEM) is used. The system’s collision frequency is extracted periodically using a novel collision detection algorithm that detects and ignores duplicate collisions. Finally, a multiscale bi-directional PBM–DEM coupling framework is presented to simulate the aggregation mechanism. PBM and DEM simulations take place periodically to update the particle size distribution (PSD) and extract the collision-frequency, respectively. The coupling framework successfully explains the dependence between the PSD and the collision frequency. Additionally, computational cost of the algorithm is optimized while maintaining the accuracy of the results. Lastly, the accuracy and efficiency of the developed framework are verified using two different test cases. In one of the examples, a simple aggregation is simulated directly inside the DEM for the first time.

An efficient multiscale bi-directional PBM-DEM coupling framework to simulate one-dimensional aggregation mechanisms

Bacterial leaf spot pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignaeradiatae produces symptoms on leaves, stems, pods and seeds. Small water-soaked spots are the initial symptoms observed on leaves and appear within 4 to 10 days of infection. Bacterium was tested on 20 different plant species by inoculating one months old leaves by carborundum abrasion technique and the disease development was recorded. The pathogen could produce visible symptoms on Black gram ( Vigna mungo ), cow pea ( Vigna sinensis ) and cluster bean ( Cyamopsis tetragonoloba ) out of the twenty plant species. This study indicates that sensitive plant species may be collateral hosts of this pathogen and it has narrow host range. In host age studies, the PDI decrease with increase in age of green gram plants after attaining the maximum severity at 30 days stage. In plant debris, the survival period of pathogen was maximum (480 days) in refrigerator and minimum (40 days) in outdoor conditions. The bacterium survived longer in seeds (570 days) in case of bacteria soaked seeds stored in refrigerator.

Host range and survival of green gram leaf spot bacterium

Aim and objective This study aimed to compare cephalometrically the rate of maxillary incisor intrusion using mini implants, Connecticut intrusion arches, and segmental intrusion arches. Materials and methods Thirty-two adult patients with deep bite were divided into three groups: 10 patients in mini implant and Connecticut intrusion arch group each and 12 patients in segmental intrusion arch group. Bilateral mini implants were used for intrusion in Group 1. Connecticut intrusion arch and Burstone's three-piece intrusion arch were used for intrusion in Group 2 and Group 3, respectively. Intrusion was carried out in all the patients for 4 months. Lateral cephalograms were taken just after alignment and leveling (T1) and after 4 months of intrusion (T2). Results The mean amount of intrusion observed was 1.7 mm (0.425 mm/month) in mini implant group, 1.4 mm (0.35 mm/month) in Connecticut intrusion arch group, and 1.66 mm (0.415 mm/month) in segmental intrusion arch group. No statistically significant difference was found in the extent of incisor intrusion in the three groups (p Conclusion The study failed to reject the null hypothesis, and there was no statistically significant difference in the amount and rate of incisor intrusion achieved among the three groups (p >0.05). Clinical significance Significant amount of incisor intrusion was carried out by all the three methods. There was no statistically significant difference in the amount and rate of incisor intrusion achieved by the three methods. Clinically, mini implants can be considered superior to the conventional techniques as it provides absolute anchorage which eliminates unwanted effects of incisor intrusion.
