Evidence for Purifying Selection Against Synonymous Mutations in Mammalian Exonic Splicing Enhancers
TL;DR: It is shown that synonymous sites in putative ESEs evolve more slowly than the remaining exonic sequence, and constraints on synonymous evolution within E SEs causes the true mutation rate to be underestimated by not more than approximately 8%.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stratus not altocumulus: a new view of the yeast protein interaction network.
Nizar N. Batada,Teresa Reguly,Ashton Breitkreutz,Lorrie Boucher,Lorrie Boucher,Bobby Joe Breitkreutz,Laurence D. Hurst,Mike Tyers,Mike Tyers +8 more
TL;DR: This analysis suggests that the organization of global protein interaction network is highly interconnected and hence interdependent, more like the continuous dense aggregations of stratus clouds than the segregated configuration of altocumulus clouds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolution of chromosome organization driven by selection for reduced gene expression noise
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that persistently open chromatin domains are sinks for essential genes, as they enable reduced noise by avoidance of transcriptional bursting associated with chromatin remodeling, and concluded that different noise characteristics of different genomic domains favors nonrandom gene positioning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting the virulence of MRSA from its genome sequence
Maisem Laabei,Mario Recker,Justine K. Rudkin,Mona Aldeljawi,Zeynep Gülay,Tim J. Sloan,Paul Williams,Jennifer L. Endres,Kenneth W. Bayles,Paul D. Fey,Vijaya Kumar Yajjala,Todd J. Widhelm,Erica Hawkins,Katie Lewis,Sara Parfett,Lucy Scowen,Sharon J. Peacock,Matthew T. G. Holden,Daniel J. Wilson,Timothy D. Read,Jean M. H. van den Elsen,Nicholas K. Priest,Edward J. Feil,Laurence D. Hurst,Elisabet Josefsson,Ruth C. Massey +25 more
TL;DR: Assayed the toxicity and adhesion of 90 MRSA (methicillin resistant S. aureus) isolates and found that while there was remarkably little variation in adhesion, toxicity varied by over an order of magnitude between isolates, suggesting different evolutionary selection pressures acting on these two traits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinct physiological and behavioural functions for parental alleles of imprinted Grb10
Alastair S. Garfield,Michael Cowley,Michael Cowley,Florentia M. Smith,Kim Moorwood,Joanne E. Stewart-Cox,Kerry E. Gilroy,Sian Baker,Jing Xia,Jeffrey W. Dalley,Laurence D. Hurst,Lawrence Stephen Wilkinson,Anthony Roger Isles,Andrew Ward +13 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that within the brain Grb10 is expressed from the paternal allele from fetal life into adulthood and that ablation of this expression engenders increased social dominance specifically among other aspects of social behaviour, a finding supported by the observed increase in allogrooming by paternal Grb 10-deficient animals.
