Journal ArticleDOI
Birth weight and prenatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE): a meta-analysis within 12 European Birth Cohorts
Eva Govarts,Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen,Greet Schoeters,Greet Schoeters,Ferran Ballester,K. Bloemen,Michielde de Boer,Cécile Chevrier,Cécile Chevrier,Merete Eggesbø,Mònica Guxens,Ursula Krämer,Juliette Legler,David Martinez,Lubica Palkovicova,Evridiki Patelarou,Ulrich Ranft,Arja Rautio,Maria Skaalum Petersen,Rémy Slama,Rémy Slama,Hein Stigum,Gunnar Toft,Tomas Trnovec,Stéphanie Vandentorren,Pal Weihe,Nynke Weisglas Kuperus,Michael Wilhelm,Jürgen Wittsiepe,Jens Peter Bonde +29 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that low-level exposure to PCB (or correlated exposures) impairs fetal growth, but that exposure to p,p´-DDE does not.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preterm birth, infant weight gain, and childhood asthma risk : A meta-analysis of 147,000 European children
Agnes M.M. Sonnenschein-van der Voort,Lidia R. Arends,Johan C. de Jongste,Isabella Annesi-Maesano,S. Wijga,Martine Vrijheid,Vincent W. V. Jaddoe,Liesbeth Duijts +58 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors performed an individual participant data meta-analysis for 147,252 children of 31 birth cohort studies to determine the associations of birth and infant growth characteristics with the risks of preschool wheezing (1-4 years) and school-age asthma (5-10 years).
Journal ArticleDOI
Prenatal exposure to PCB-153, p,p '-DDE and birth outcomes in 9000 mother-child pairs : exposure-response relationship and effect modifiers
Maribel Casas,Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen,David Martinez,Ferran Ballester,Xavier Basagaña,Mikel Basterrechea,Leda Chatzi,Cécile Chevrier,Merete Eggesbø,Mariana F. Fernández,Eva Govarts,Mònica Guxens,Joan O. TL;DR: It is suggested that the association between low-level exposure to PCB-153 and birth weight exists and follows an inverse linear exposure-response relationship with effects even at low levels, and that maternal smoking and ethnicity modify this association.
Journal ArticleDOI
Health impact assessment of waste management facilities in three European countries
Francesco Forastiere,Chiara Badaloni,Kees de Hoogh,Martin Krayer von Kraus,Marco Martuzzi,Francesco Mitis,Lubica Palkovicova,Daniela Porta,Philipp Preiss,Andrea Ranzi,Carlo A. Perucci,David Briggs +11 more
TL;DR: The current health impacts of landfilling and incineration can be characterized as moderate when compared to other sources of environmental pollution, e.g. traffic or industrial emissions, that have an impact on public health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prenatal PCB Exposure and Thymus Size at Birth in Neonates in Eastern Slovakia
TL;DR: This study provides the first evidence to date that PCB exposure in neonates is associated with a smaller thymic volume, suggesting possible impaired immunologic development.
