Journal ArticleDOI
The impact of heat waves on mortality in 9 European cities: results from the EuroHEAT project
Daniela D’Ippoliti,Paola Michelozzi,Claudia Marino,Francesca de’Donato,Bettina Menne,Klea Katsouyanni,Ursula Kirchmayer,Antonis Analitis,Mercedes Medina-Ramón,Anna Páldy,Richard Atkinson,Sari Kovats,Luigi Bisanti,Alexandra Schneider,Agnès Lefranc,Carmen Iñiguez,Carlo A. Perucci +16 more
TL;DR: Climate change scenarios indicate that extreme events are expected to increase in the future even in regions where heat waves are not frequent, so prevention programs should specifically target the elderly, women and those suffering from chronic respiratory disorders, thus reducing the impact on mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Projections of temperature-related excess mortality under climate change scenarios
Antonio Gasparrini,Yuming Guo,Yuming Guo,Francesco Sera,Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera,Veronika Huber,Shilu Tong,Shilu Tong,Shilu Tong,Micheline de Sousa Zanotti Stagliorio Coelho,Paulo Hilário Nascimento Saldiva,Eric Lavigne,Patricia Matus Correa,Nicolas Valdes Ortega,Haidong Kan,Samuel Osorio,Jan Kyselý,Jan Kyselý,Aleš Urban,Jouni J. Bell,Tran Ngoc Dang,Tran Ngoc Dang,Dung Do Van,Clare Heaviside,Clare Heaviside,Sotiris Vardoulakis,Shakoor Hajat,Andy Haines,Ben Armstrong +54 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that climate change can directly affect human health by varying exposure to non-optimal outdoor temperature, however, evidence on this direct impact at a global scale is limited.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preterm birth, infant weight gain, and childhood asthma risk : A meta-analysis of 147,000 European children
Agnes M.M. Sonnenschein-van der Voort,Lidia R. Arends,Johan C. de Jongste,Isabella Annesi-Maesano,S. Wijga,Martine Vrijheid,Vincent W. V. Jaddoe,Liesbeth Duijts +58 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors performed an individual participant data meta-analysis for 147,252 children of 31 birth cohort studies to determine the associations of birth and infant growth characteristics with the risks of preschool wheezing (1-4 years) and school-age asthma (5-10 years).
Journal ArticleDOI

Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera,Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera,Noah Scovronick,Francesco Sera,Francesco Sera,Dominic Royé,Rochelle Schneider,Aurelio Tobias,Christopher Astrom,Yuming Guo,Yasushi Honda,David M. Gillett,Andy Haines,Andy Haines,Matthias Mengel,Veronika Huber,Veronika Huber,Antonio Gasparrini +81 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors use empirical data from 732 locations in 43 countries to estimate the mortality burdens associated with the additional heat exposure that has resulted from recent human-induced warming, during the period 1991-2018.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantifying excess deaths related to heatwaves under climate change scenarios: A multicountry time series modelling study
Yuming Guo,Antonio Gasparrini,Shanshan Li,Francesco Sera,Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera,Micheline de Sousa Zanotti Stagliorio Coelho,Micheline de Sousa Zanotti Stagliorio Coelho,Paulo Hilário Nascimento Saldiva,Eric Lavigne,Benjawan Tawatsupa,Kornwipa Punnasiri,Ala Overcenco,Patricia Matus Correa,Nicolas Valdes Ortega,Haidong Kan,Samuel Osorio,Jouni J. Bell,Ben Armstrong,Kristie L. Ebi,Shilu Tong,Shilu Tong,Shilu Tong +44 more
TL;DR: A comprehensive characterisation of future heatwave-related excess mortality across various regions and under alternative scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions, different assumptions of adaptation, and different scenarios of population change is provided to help decision makers in planning adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change.
