Complex immune dysregulation in covid-19 patients with severe respiratory failure
Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis,Mihai G. Netea,Mihai G. Netea,Nikoletta Rovina,Karolina Akinosoglou,Anastasia Antoniadou,Nikolaos Antonakos,Georgia Damoraki,Theologia Gkavogianni,Maria Evangelia Adami,Paraskevi Katsaounou,Maria Ntaganou,Magdalini Kyriakopoulou,George Dimopoulos,Ioannis Koutsodimitropoulos,Dimitrios Velissaris,Panagiotis Koufargyris,Athanassios Karageorgos,Konstantina Katrini,Vasileios Lekakis,Mihaela Lupse,Antigone Kotsaki,George Renieris,Danai Theodoulou,Vassiliki Panou,Evangelia Koukaki,Nikolaos Koulouris,Charalambos Gogos,Antonia Koutsoukou +28 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors found that severe respiratory failure (SRF) in COVID-19 patients is driven by a unique pattern of immune dysfunction, characterized by IL-6-mediated low HLA-DR expression and lymphopenia, associated with sustained cytokine production and hyper-inflammation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assesment of the Duke criteria for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis after twenty-years. An analysis of 241 cases
Adriana Violeta Topan,Dumitru Carstina,Adriana Slavcovici,Raluca Rancea,Radu Capalneanu,Mihaela Lupse +5 more
TL;DR: Evaluating the presence and the individual value of each criterion of the modified Duke criteria in patients with infective endocarditis found that low index of suspicion of IE and inappropriate use of antibiotics may have a great negative impact on the diagnosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Functional and Genomic Architecture of Borrelia burgdorferi-Induced Cytokine Responses in Humans
Marije Oosting,Mariska Kerstholt,Rob ter Horst,Yang Li,Patrick Deelen,Sanne P. Smeekens,Martin Jaeger,Ekta Lachmandas,Hedwig D. Vrijmoeth,Mihaela Lupse,Mirela Flonta,Robert A. Cramer,Bart Jan Kullberg,Vinod Kumar,Ramnik J. Xavier,Cisca Wijmenga,Mihai G. Netea,Leo A. B. Joosten +17 more
TL;DR: Functional genomics approaches reveal the architecture of cytokine production induced by Borrelia infection of human primary leukocytes and suggest a connection between cellular glucose metabolism and Bor Relia-induced cytokineProduction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Charlson's weighted index of comorbidities is useful in assessing the risk of death in septic patients
Simona Oltean,Doina Ţǎţulescu,Cosmina Ioana Bondor,Adriana Slavcovici,Cristina Cismaru,Mihaela Lupse,Monica Muntean,Cristian Jianu,Cristian Marcu,Mihai Oltean,Mihai Oltean +10 more
TL;DR: In septic patients, WIC is predictive for hospital mortality, and the risk of death significantly depends on WIC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of glutathione metabolism in host defense against Borrelia burgdorferi infection.
Mariska Kerstholt,Hedwig D. Vrijmoeth,Ekta Lachmandas,Marije Oosting,Mihaela Lupse,Mirela Flonta,Charles A. Dinarello,Charles A. Dinarello,Mihai G. Netea,Leo A. B. Joosten +9 more
TL;DR: GSH metabolism and glutathionylation may be important factors in the pathogenesis of Lyme disease and potentially other inflammatory diseases as well and underline how host–pathogen interactions in metabolism can play crucial roles in host defense against pathogens.
