Journal ArticleDOI
A blue stellar population in the HI bridge between the two Magellanic Clouds
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported the discovery of several hundred blue main-sequence stars in an area reaching 9° east of the SMC, coinciding with the HI ridge extending from the wing.
Journal ArticleDOI
A planetary nebula around nova v458 vulpeculae undergoing flash ionization
Roger Wesson,M. J. Barlow,Romano L. M. Corradi,Janet E. Drew,Paul J. Groot,Christian Knigge,D. Steeghs,Boris T. Gaensicke,Ralf Napiwotzki,Pablo Rodríguez-Gil,Albert A. Zijlstra,M. F. Bode,Jeremy J. Drake,David J. Frew,Eduardo Gonzalez-Solares,Robert Greimel,Mike Irwin,L. Morales-Rueda,Gijs Nelemans,Quentin A. Parker,Stuart E. Sale,Jennifer L. Sokoloski,A. Somero,H. Uthas,Nicholas A. Walton,Brian Warner,Brian Warner,Christopher A. Watson,Nicholas J. Wright,Nicholas J. Wright +29 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived a distance of 13 kpc based on light travel time considerations, which is supported by two other distance estimation methods, and identified two possible evolutionary scenarios, in at least one of which the system is massive enough to produce a Type Ia supernova upon merging.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantifying the faint structure of galaxies: the late-type spiral NGC 2403
Michael K. Barker,Annette M. N. Ferguson,Mike Irwin,Nobuo Arimoto,Pascale Jablonka,Pascale Jablonka +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a wide-field analysis of the isolated late-type spiral NGC 2403 using data obtained with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
The photometric properties of a vast stellar substructure in the outskirts of m33
Alan W. McConnachie,Annette M. N. Ferguson,Mike Irwin,John Dubinski,Lawrence M. Widrow,Aaron Dotter,Rodrigo A. Ibata,Geraint F. Lewis +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) data to quantify the stellar populations and structure of this feature using the PAndAS data.
Journal ArticleDOI
APM z ≳ 4 survey: distribution and evolution of high column density H i absorbers
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the evolution of the number density per unit redshift of the damped systems by fitting the sample with the customary power law N(z) = N_o(1 + z)^γ.
