Journal ArticleDOI
A Placenta Derived C-Terminal Fragment of β-Hemoglobin With Combined Antibacterial and Antiviral Activity.
Rüdiger Groß,Richard Bauer,Franziska Krüger,Elke Rücker-Braun,Lia-Raluca Olari,Ludger Ständker,Nico Preising,Armando Rodríguez,Carina Conzelmann,Fabian Gerbl,Daniel Sauter,Frank Kirchhoff,Benjamin Hagemann,Jasmina Gačanin,Tanja Weil,Yasser B. Ruiz-Blanco,Elsa Sanchez-Garcia,Wolf-Georg Forssmann,Annette Mankertz,Sabine Santibanez,Steffen Stenger,Paul Walther,Sebastian Wiese,Barbara Spellerberg,Jan Münch +24 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that upon viral or bacterial infection, the abundant hemoglobin precursor is proteolytically processed to release HBB(112–147), a broadly active antimicrobial innate immune defense peptide.

IFITM proteins promote SARS-CoV-2 infection of human lung cells
Caterina Prelli Bozzo,Rayhane Nchioua,Meta Volcic,Lukas Wettstein,Tatjana Weil,Jana Krüger,Sandra Heller,Carina Conzelmann,Janis A. Müller,Rüdiger Gross,Fabian Zech,Desiree Schütz,Lennart Koepke,Christina M Stuerzel,Christiane Schüler,Saskia Stenzel,Elisabeth Braun,Johanna Weiß,Daniel Sauter,Jan Münch,Steffen Stenger,Kei Sato,Alexander Kleger,Christine Goffinet,Konstantin M. J. Sparrer,Frank Kirchhoff +25 more
TL;DR: It is confirmed that overexpression of IFITMs blocks pseudoparticle infections mediated by the Spike proteins of β-coronaviruses including pandemic SARS-CoV-2 and shows that they may promote viral invasion during COVID-19.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pasteurization Inactivates SARS-CoV-2 Spiked Breast Milk.
Carina Conzelmann,Rüdiger Groß,Toni Luise Meister,Daniel Todt,Adalbert Krawczyk,Ulf Dittmer,Steffen Stenger,Jan Münch,Eike Steinmann,Janis A. Müller,Stephanie Pfaender +10 more
TL;DR: The inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 spiked into human milk is explored, which raises concerns of possible virus transmission via breast milk via vaccination and the safety and feasibility of breastfeeding.
Journal ArticleDOI
The IKZF1-IRF4/IRF5 Axis Controls Polarization of Myeloma-Associated Macrophages.
Dimitrios Mougiakakos,Christian Bach,Martin Böttcher,Fabian Beier,Linda Röhner,Andrej Stoll,Michael Rehli,Claudia Gebhard,Christopher Lischer,Martin Eberhardt,Julio Vera,Maike Büttner-Herold,Katrin Bitterer,Heidi Balzer,Magdalena Leffler,Simon Jitschin,Michael Hundemer,Mohamed H.S. Awwad,Martin Busch,Steffen Stenger,Simon Völkl,Christian Schütz,Jan Krönke,Andreas Mackensen,Heiko Bruns +24 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors observed that MAMs derived from patients treated with the immunomodulatory drug (IMiD) lenalidomide skewed phenotypically and functionally toward an M1 phenotype, and they also provided evidence that IMiDs interfere epigenetically via degradation of IKZF1, with IFN regulatory factors 4 and 5, which in turn alters the balance of M1/M2 polarization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phospholipid–Block Copolymer Hybrid Vesicles with Lysosomal Escape Ability
Wei Zong,Wei Zong,Bo Thingholm,Fabian Itel,Philipp Schattling,Edit Brodszkij,Daniel Mayer,Steffen Stenger,Kenneth N. Goldie,Xiaojun Han,Brigitte Städler +10 more
TL;DR: The synthesis of poly(cholesteryl methacrylate)- block-poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methACrylate- block- poly(2-pDMAEMA) block copolymers and their assembly with phospholipids into hybrid vesicles are reported to be a promising complementary drug delivery platform for existing liposomes and polymersomes.
