Superluminal motion of a relativistic jet in the neutron-star merger GW170817
Kunal Mooley,Kunal Mooley,Adam Deller,Ore Gottlieb,Ehud Nakar,Gregg Hallinan,Stephen Bourke,Dale A. Frail,Assaf Horesh,A. Corsi,Kenta Hotokezaka +10 more
TL;DR: Radio observations using very long-baseline interferometry find that the compact radio source associated with GW170817 exhibits superluminal apparent motion between 75 days and 230 days after the merger event, which breaks the degeneracy between the choked- and successful-jet cocoon models.
Journal ArticleDOI
A mildly relativistic wide-angle outflow in the neutron-star merger event GW170817
Kunal Mooley,Kunal Mooley,Kunal Mooley,Ehud Nakar,Kenta Hotokezaka,Gregg Hallinan,Alessandra Corsi,Dale A. Frail,Assaf Horesh,Tara Murphy,Emil Lenc,David L. Kaplan,Kaushik De,Dougal Dobie,Dougal Dobie,Poonam Chandra,Poonam Chandra,Adam Deller,Ore Gottlieb,Mansi M. Kasliwal,Shrinivas R. Kulkarni,Steven T. Myers,Samaya Nissanke,Tsvi Piran,Christene Lynch,Varun Bhalerao,Stephen Bourke,Keith W. Bannister,Leo Singer +28 more
TL;DR: The cocoon model explains the radio light curve of GW170817, as well as the γ-ray and X-ray emission (and possibly also the ultraviolet and optical emission), and is the model that is most consistent with the observational data.
