Adult mouse cortical cell taxonomy revealed by single cell transcriptomics
Bosiljka Tasic,Vilas Menon,Thuc Nghi Nguyen,Tae Kyung Kim,Tim Jarsky,Zizhen Yao,Boaz P. Levi,Lucas T. Gray,Staci A. Sorensen,Tim A. Dolbeare,Darren Bertagnolli,Jeff Goldy,Nadiya V. Shapovalova,Sheana Parry,Changkyu Lee,Kimberly A. Smith,Amy Bernard,Linda Madisen,Susan M. Sunkin,Michael Hawrylycz,Christof Koch,Hongkui Zeng +21 more
TL;DR: This work constructed a cellular taxonomy of one cortical region, primary visual cortex, in adult mice on the basis of single-cell RNA sequencing and identified 49 transcriptomic cell types, including 23 GABAergic, 19 glutamatergic and 7 non-neuronal types.
Journal ArticleDOI
Shared and distinct transcriptomic cell types across neocortical areas

Looger,Amy Bernard,John W. Phillips,Ed S. Lein,Michael Hawrylycz,Karel Svoboda,Allan R. Jones,Christof Koch,Hongkui Zeng +48 more
TL;DR: This study establishes a combined transcriptomic and projectional taxonomy of cortical cell types from functionally distinct areas of the adult mouse cortex and identifies 133 transcriptomic types of glutamatergic neurons to their long-range projection specificity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Canonical Genetic Signatures of the Adult Human Brain
Michael Hawrylycz,Jeremy A. Miller,Vilas Menon,David Feng,Tim A. Dolbeare,Angela L. Guillozet-Bongaarts,Anil G. Jegga,Bruce J. Aronow,Changkyu Lee,Amy Bernard,Matthew F. Glasser,Donna L. Phillips,Lydia Ng,Chinh Dang,David R. Haynor,Allan R. Jones,David C. Van Essen,Christof Koch,Ed S. Lein +30 more
TL;DR: Genes in neuron-associated compared to non-neuronal networks showed higher preservation between human and mouse; however, many diversely patterned genes displayed marked shifts in regulation between species.

TL;DR: A combined transcriptomic and projectional taxonomy of cortical cell types from functionally distinct regions of the mouse cortex is established and correspondence between excitatory transcriptomic types and their region-specific long-range target specificity is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinct descending motor cortex pathways and their roles in movement
Michael N. Economo,Sarada Viswanathan,Bosiljka Tasic,Erhan Bas,Johan Winnubst,Vilas Menon,Lucas T. Graybuck,Thuc Nghi Nguyen,Kimberly A. Smith,Zizhen Yao,Lihua Wang,Charles R. Gerfen,Jayaram Chandrashekar,Hongkui Zeng,Loren L. Looger,Karel Svoboda +15 more
TL;DR: Transcriptional profiling and axonal reconstructions identify two types of pyramidal tract neuron in the motor cortex: one type projects to thalamic regions and produces early and persistent preparatory activity, and the other type Projects to motor centres in the medulla and produces motor commands.
