Inhibitory effects of safflower and bitter melon extracts on biogenic amine formation by fish spoilage bacteria and food borne pathogens

Abstract: The impact of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) and bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) extracts on growth of fish spoilage bacteria (Acinetobacter lwoffii, Pseudomonas oryzihabitans, Enterobacter cloacae, Shigella spp., Morganella psychrotolerans, Photobacterium phosphoreum) and food-borne pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella Paratyphi A) and their biogenic amine formation were investigated in mackerel infusion decarboxylase broth (MIDB). The broth microdilution method was used to test antimicrobial activity of extracts. Ent. faecalis was the most susceptible microorganism with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 6.25 mg/mL against safflower extract, whilst bitter melon had the highest inhibitory effect against growth of Ent. cloacae, Shigella spp. and Ent. faecalis with MIC of 12.5 mg/mL. Characterizations for the Riesz potential and its commutators on generalized Orlicz-Morrey spaces

Abstract: In the present paper, we shall give a characterization for the Spanne and Adams type boundedness of the Riesz potential and its commutators on the generalized Orlicz-Morrey spaces, respectively. Also we give criteria for the weak versions of Spanne and Adams type boundedness of the Riesz potential on the generalized Orlicz-Morrey spaces. In all the cases the conditions for the boundedness are given in terms of Zygmund type integral inequalities involving the Young function $\Phi(u)$ and the function $\varphi(x,r)$ defining the space.

Contrast Sensitivity of Thyroid Associated Ophthalmopathy Patients without Obvious Optic Neuropathy

Abstract: Purpose. To compare the contrast sensitivity levels of thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) patients without obvious optic neuropathy with those of healthy people. Methods. Forty eyes of 20 TAO patients without dysthyroid optic neuropathy and 40 eyes of 20 healthy subjects were evaluated in this prospective case-controlled study. The contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) of all subjects were measured by the functional acuity contrast test (FACT) in five frequencies which were 1,5 cpd (A), 3 cpd (B), 6 cpd (C), 12 cpd (D), and 18 cpd (E). Results were compared for both groups, and a correlation of CSF with Hertel and clinical activity scores was assessed. Results. There was no statistically significant difference between TAO patients and control groups for age and sex. TAO patients had lower levels than the control group in all the frequencies of CSFs () and the difference in contrast sensitivity functions between the groups seems to be more significant in higher frequencies (B, C, D, and E) (). Conclusions. TAO patients without DON can have contrast sensitivity loss and this would probably imply subtle optic nerve dysfunction in early disease phase.
