Parents' Views Regarding the Values Aimed to be Taught in Social Studies Lessons

Abstract: Th is study aimed at learning parents’ ideas about the values aimed to be taught in Social Studies lessons in the 4 th and 5 th grades of the primary education and about values education. Study data were collected by administering “the Values Education I” and “Values Education II” questionnaire forms developed by the researchers. Th e views of 378 and 387 parents who filled “the Values Education I” and “Values Education II” questionnaires respectively were collected. Th e results obtained in the light of the collected data are as follows: parents of the students attending at the 4 th and 5 th grades of primary education used 19 diff erent values to define the values that have to be taught; they listed the reasons of value education as “success, socialization, democratization, self-improvement of the children”, “peace” and “necessity to teach these values.” Parents deemed both themselves and the school suff icient in terms of values education and they thought that the main responsibility of giving values education belongs first to parents and second to school. Parents gave priority to the values such as “patriotism,” “honesty,” “attaching importance to family unity,” “responsibility,” and “hardworking.”

Prevalence of Brucella in raw milk: An example from Turkey

Abstract: Aim: Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonotic infection affecting livestock and human beings. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Brucella in raw milk collected from a provincial center and central villages in the Central Anatolian region. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was completed between March and September of 2016. The sample size for research was calculated as 263 milk samples with the Epi Info 2000 program. Samples were tested with the milk ring test, Rose Bengal test, and standard Brucella tube agglutination test. Suspicious samples according to these tests were seeded on medium for observation. Results: In this study, 202 cow's milk samples collected from 14 central villages were researched for the presence of Brucella abortus, a Brucella species bacterium. According to the medium seeding results, 35 of 202 raw cow's milk samples (17.32%) were identified as suspicious. Conclusion: The research investigated the prevalence of Brucella in milk samples collected from bovine farms used for consumption and production of raw milk products. The most significant infection route in our region is considered to be consumption of milk and milk products such as raw milk and fresh cheese. Especially in rural areas, households consuming their own produced milk are common. In regions with family-style milk and milk product production and consumption, interventional studies with the aim of improving knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to zoonotic diseases should not be neglected.

Morphology of spermathecae of some pentatomids (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from Turkey.

Abstract: The spermathecal morphology of nine species belonging to the Pentatomidae (Insecta: Heteroptera) were compared by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Among the examined species [Rhaphigaster nebulosa (Poda 1761), Palomena prasina (Linnaeus 1761), Piezodorus lituratus (Fabricius 1794), Graphosoma lineatum (Linnaeus 1758), Graphosoma semipunctatum (Fabricius 1775), Aelia albovittata (Fieber 1868), Codophila varia (Fabricius 1787), Ancyrosoma leucogrammes (Gmelin 1790), Nezara viridula (Linnaeus 1758)], all spermathecae contained a spermathecal bulb (reservoir), a pumping region, distal and proximal flanges, proximal and distal spermathecal ducts, dilation of spermathecal duct and a genital chamber containing two ring sclerites, but each species had a different spermathecal morphology.
