Abstract: Through a systematic structural search we found an allotrope of carbon with Cmmm symmetry which we predict to be more stable than graphite for pressures above 10 GPa. This material, which we refer to as $Z$-carbon, is formed by pure $s{p}^{3}$ bonds and it provides an explanation to several features in experimental x-ray diffraction and Raman spectra of graphite under pressure. The transition from graphite to $Z$-carbon can occur through simple sliding and buckling of graphene sheets. Our calculations predict that $Z$-carbon is a transparent wide band-gap semiconductor with a hardness comparable to diamond.

Abstract: A chain of one-dimensional oscillators is considered. They are mechanically uncoupled and interact via a stochastic process which redistributes the energy between nearest neighbors. The total energy is kept constant except for the interactions of the extremal oscillators with reservoirs at different temperatures. The stationary measures are obtained when the chain is finite; the thermodynamic limit is then considered, approach to the Gibbs distribution is proven, and a linear temperature profile is obtained.

Abstract: It is shown that even a single e-e+ pair created by a superstrong laser field in vacuum would cause development of an avalanchelike QED cascade which rapidly depletes the incoming laser pulse. This confirms Bohr's old conjecture that the electric field of the critical QED strength ES=m2c3/e could never be created. © 2010 The American Physical Society.
