TL;DR: This work presents an all-in-one solution, the first supercontinuum in a bulk homogeneous material extending from 450 nm into the mid-infrared, based on filamentation of femtosecond mid-Infrared pulses in the anomalous dispersion regime.
Abstract: Broadband coherent light sources are crucial for numerous applications, such as imaging and spectroscopy. Using filamentation of mid-infrared laser pulses in bulk crystals, Silva et al. generate supercontinuum spectra over three octaves, from 4.5 μm to 450 nm, with carrier-envelope phase stability.

TL;DR: In this paper, a minimal embedding of the Standard Model spectrum in a D-brane configuration of type I string theory is proposed, which is neither grand unified nor supersymmetric but leads to the right prediction of the weak angle for a string scale of the order of a few TeV.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that spatial constrained dendritic connectivity is a key factor for community composition and population persistence, and that local dispersal in isotropic lattice landscapes homogenizes local species richness and leads to pronounced spatial persistence.
Abstract: Biological communities often occur in spatially structured habitats where connectivity directly affects dispersal and metacommunity processes. Recent theoretical work suggests that dispersal constrained by the connectivity of specific habitat structures, such as dendrites like river networks, can explain observed features of biodiversity, but direct evidence is still lacking. We experimentally show that connectivity per se shapes diversity patterns in microcosm metacommunities at different levels. Local dispersal in isotropic lattice landscapes homogenizes local species richness and leads to pronounced spatial persistence. On the contrary, dispersal along dendritic landscapes leads to higher variability in local diversity and among-community composition. Although headwaters exhibit relatively lower species richness, they are crucial for the maintenance of regional biodiversity. Our results establish that spatially constrained dendritic connectivity is a key factor for community composition and population persistence.

TL;DR: This work takes a second approach consisting of keeping the boundary layer laminar as long as possible by forcing small optimal perturbations, and shows that by using this passive control technique it is possible to sensibly delay transition to turbulence.
Abstract: Reducing skin friction is important in nature and in many technological applications. This reduction may be achieved by reducing stresses in turbulent boundary layers, for instance tailoring biomimetic rough skins. Here we take a second approach consisting of keeping the boundary layer laminar as long as possible by forcing small optimal perturbations. Because of the highly non-normal nature of the underlying linearized operator, these perturbations are highly amplified and able to modify the mean velocity profiles at leading order. We report results of wind-tunnel experiments in which we implement this concept by using suitably designed roughness elements placed on the skin to enforce nearly optimal perturbations. We show that by using this passive control technique it is possible to sensibly delay transition to turbulence.
