TL;DR: The 5.67-megabase genome of the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 consists of a circular chromosome, a linear chromosome, and two plasmids that suggest a recent evolutionary divergence.
Abstract: The 5.67-megabase genome of the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 consists of a circular chromosome, a linear chromosome, and two plasmids. Extensive orthology and nucleotide colinearity between the genomes of A. tumefaciens and the plant symbiont Sinorhizobium meliloti suggest a recent evolutionary divergence. Their similarities include metabolic, transport, and regulatory systems that promote survival in the highly competitive rhizosphere; differences are apparent in their genome structure and virulence gene complement. Availability of the A. tumefaciens sequence will facilitate investigations into the molecular basis of pathogenesis and the evolutionary divergence of pathogenic and symbiotic lifestyles.

TL;DR: Eichhornia azurea, the plant with the highest complexity class, presented the greatest number of unique spider species, differing from the other plants in spider species composition.
Abstract: Differences in species richness and species composition of spiders associated with aquatic macrophytes of different structural complexities were examined in the Pantanal floodplain of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The plants studied were Nymphaea amazonum (Nymphaeaceae), Salvinia auriculata (Salviniaceae), Echinodorus paniculatus (Alismataceae) and Eichhornia azurea (Pontederiaceae), whose classes of complexity were determined based on their leaf and branch densities, vertical structure, and height. Data were collected from 62 monospecific plant patches in temporary lentic environments. A total of 235 spiders of 33 species in 13 families was collected. Nymphaea amazonum, the plant with the lowest complexity class, did not provide adequate sites for the establishment of spiders, and only four individuals of four spider species were found on its patches. Salvinia auriculata and E. paniculatus shared the intermediate class of complexity, but showed statistically significant differences in composition ...

TL;DR: Analysis of invertebrate fauna associated with colonies of the bryozoan Schizoporella errata at two sites differing in hydrodynamism in southeastern Brazil indicated that an interaction between water movement and trophic structure could explain these differences.
Abstract: The invertebrate fauna associated with colonies of the bryozoan Schizoporella errata was studied at two sites differing in hydrodynamism in southeastern Brazil. Patterns of species distribution, abundance, and diversity were similar at both sites. Polychaetes dominated the assemblages, both in number of individuals and species, with 70 species distributed in 20 families. Decapod crustaceans were also abundant, mainly anomuran crabs and caridean shrimps. Cluster analysis separated the samples from each site, and further analysis indicated that an interaction between water movement and trophic structure could explain these differences. At the site with low water movement, more muddy sediments were found inside the colonies, and a greater proportion of deposit-feeders was found. At the other site, higher hydrodynamism resulted in less sediments within the colonies, and favoured the occurrence of more filter-feeders. The trophic structure of faunal assemblages can help understand the structure of assemblages associated with biogenic substrata, as already demonstrated for benthic communities.

TL;DR: A combined methodology consisting of successive linear programming (SLP) and a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) solves the reactive planning problem.
Abstract: A combined methodology consisting of successive linear programming (SLP) and a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) solves the reactive planning problem. The problem is divided into operating and planning subproblems; the operating subproblem, which is a nonlinear, ill-conditioned and nonconvex problem, consists of determining the voltage control and the adjustment of reactive sources. The planning subproblem consists of obtaining the optimal reactive source expansion considering operational, economical and physical characteristics of the system. SLP solves the optimal reactive dispatch problem related to real variables, while SGA is used to determine the necessary adjustments of both the binary and discrete variables existing in the modelling problem. Once the set of candidate busbars has been defined, the program implemented gives the location and size of the reactive sources needed, if any, to maintain the operating and security constraints.

TL;DR: The black trap was much more productive than the white, especially for anthropophilic species, and the difference between the diversity index of the two traps was not significant at level 0.05.
Abstract: A white Shannon-type trap was used for captures of female sand flies in the search for natural infection with flagellates, however, due to its low productivity and as a large number of phlebotomines settled on the researchers' black clothes, we decided to compare the relative attractiveness of black and white Shannon-type traps for sand flies. Several pairs of black and white traps were placed side by side in front of caves in four areas in the Serra da Bodoquena, Bonito county, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, for a total of 12 observations and 44 h of capture. The experiment resulted in 889 phlebotomines captured, 801 on the black and 88 on the white trap, representing 13 species. The hourly Williams' means were 8.67 and 1.24, respectively, and the black/white ratio was 7.0:1.0. Lutzomyia almerioi, an anthropophilic species closely associated with caves, was predominant (89%). Only two other species, Nyssomyia whitmani and Psathyromyia punctigeniculata, also anthropophilic, were significantly attracted to the black rather than to the white trap (c2 test; p £ 0.01). The difference between the diversity index of the two traps was not significant at level 0.05. The black trap in these circumstances was much more productive than the white, especially for anthropophilic species.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the health and nutritional situation of South American Indian children from a Terena community, characterizing their nutritional status, food consumption, and socioeconomic and environmental conditions.
Abstract: This paper describes the health and nutritional situation of South American Indian children from a Terena community, characterizing their nutritional status, food consumption, and socioeconomic and environmental conditions. The sample included 100 children, ranging from 0 to 59 months of age and living in Aldeia Corrego do Meio, Mato Grosso do Sul. Prevailing nutritional deficits were: 8.0% for the weight-for-age index, 16.0% for height-for-age, and 5.0% for weight-for-height. The growth deficit rate was higher than that of the Brazilian population as a whole, probably reflecting the precarious socioeconomic, environmental, and health conditions in this Terena community. Analysis of the average nutrient sufficiency in the infant diet showed that nutritional recommendations for the different groups were not complied with. New studies, characterized as transdisciplinary and longitudinal, are necessary to better understand this process.

TL;DR: This work studied the canopy tree species Calophyllum brasiliense Camb.
Abstract: Further studies on growth and reproduction of many tree species are needed to know the regeneration patterns of tropical forests (Clark & Clark 1987, Heideman 1989). Thus, the need for studies on the c. 3% of Atlantic forest that remains in Brazil is acute, particularly in the rarely studied swamp habitats (Scarano et al. 1997). We studied the canopy tree species Calophyllum brasiliense Camb. (Clusiaceae) in flooded and unflooded habitats of a coastal lowland rain forest, in order to describe demography, sexual expression, phenology and flower and fruit production. We report the differences of such traits among three contiguous habitats found in the lowlands - unflooded forest, freshwater-flooded forest and mangrove.

TL;DR: The phenotypic plasticity of this insect species in adult size and development time allows individuals growing on low quality sites to reach maturity, thus enhancing exploitation of the host plant.
Abstract: The response of a host plant to gall-inducing insects varies both among and within plants, so that different levels of resources are available to the insects. The weevil Collabismus clitellae Boheman induces galls on the shoots of Solanum lycocarpum St Hil. in south-east Brazil. Galls are found on a range of parts within an individual plant and are more abundant on smaller plants. In the present study, the host plant response as a possible influence on the performance of C. clitellae both between and within plants was tested. Gall abortion increased with plant height. Within plants, gall size was positively related to shoot diameter and number of chambers within the gall. The increase in gall larval density (number of individuals per gall volume unit) resulted in smaller adults and reduced developmental rates, probably because of resource limitation within the gall. The number of eggs laid by females increased with shoot diameter. Females laid more eggs on thicker shoots, where there are fewer chances to form galls with high larval density. However, this relationship was weak and a large variation was found for adult sizes. The availability of high quality sites is limited to smaller plants and thicker shoots located on the basal region of the plant. The phenotypic plasticity of this insect species in adult size and development time allows individuals growing on low quality sites to reach maturity, thus enhancing exploitation of the host plant.

TL;DR: High levels of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, proline, and lysine but low levels of methionine and aromatic amino acids in both inhibitors suggest that TDI-II belongs to a new inhibitor subclass of low-molecular mass proteins in the subfamily Caesalpinoideae.
Abstract: Two new trypsin inhibitors, TDI-I and TDI-II, were purified from the seeds of the native Brazilian tree Copaifera langsdorffii (Caesalpinoideae, Leguminosae). The purification procedure involved ammonium sulfate fractionation, ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sepharose, affinity chromatography on trypsin-Sepharose, and reversed-phase (RP) HPLC. RP-HPLC yielded two forms (TDI-I and TDI-II), as confirmed by isoelectric focusing, with pI values between 7.0 and 8.1. The molecular mass of the TDI forms was 24 kDa based on FPLC gel filtration on Superdex 75. Under reducing conditions in tricine SDS-PAGE the molecular masses of TDI-I and TDI-II were 12 and 10 kDa, respectively. The Ki values were 1.1 and 1.2 nM for TDI-I and TDI-II, respectively, and there was no inhibitory effect on chymotrypsin. Amino acid analysis revealed high levels of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, proline, and lysine but low levels of methionine and aromatic amino acids in both inhibitors; the calculated molecular masses were 11,456 and 10,008 for TDI-I and II, respectively. Based on the N-terminal sequences of TDI-I and TDI-II, TDI-I belongs to the Kunitz family of trypsin inhibitors, whereas TDI-II showed no homology to any other protein. This observation suggests that TDI-II belongs to a new inhibitor subclass of low-molecular mass proteins in the subfamily Caesalpinoideae.

TL;DR: Alochtonous population is the main responsible for presence of the infection and morbidity of Chagas disease in the studied area.
Abstract: In order to evaluate some aspects of the Chagas' disease on urban population of the 12 municipalities of the sanitarian district of Rio Verde, Mato Grosso do Sul state, on 1998 we carried out a serological survey investigating anti-T. cruzi IgG by indirect immunofluorescence on blood samples collected on filter paper of 14,709 resident persons, confirmed by indirect hemagglutination and ELISA in serum. The parasitaemia was evaluated by indirect xenodiagnosis on 134 chagasic patients and the morbidity evaluated by anamnesis, physical exam and electrocardiogram in 191 pairs of chagasic/non-chagasic patients. The seropositivity was 1.83% (0.93% in autochtonous, 5.01% in alochtonous), xenodiagnosis was positive in 17.2% of the individuals (12.3% in autochtonous, 20.8% in alochtonous) and 24.6% of the seropositive patients presented chronic chagasic cardiopathy (19.1% in autochtonous, 27.8 in alochtonous). The analysis of the dates showed that alochtonous population is the main responsible for presence of the infection and morbidity of Chagas disease in the studied area.

TL;DR: In this paper, a parametric power flow (OPF) algorithm based on parametric technique is proposed, which relaxes the OPF problem by incorporating parametric terms to the objective function, the equality, and inequality constraints.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of numerical experiments with a new optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm based on a parametric technique. The approach consists of relaxing the original OPF problem by incorporating parametric terms to the objective function, the equality, and inequality constraints. Such relaxation assures that any arbitrary initial solution, feasible or unfeasible, be the optimal solution of the OPF problem. As the scalar parameter changes, a family of OPF problems is created, whose necessary conditions are solved by Newton's method. An efficient strategy is proposed for updating the parameter and the optimal set of active inequality constraints of each intermediate problem. Two applications of the methodology are reported: the economic dispatch problem and the minimum transmission loss problem. These problems were solved for an 810-bus and a 2256-bus equivalent network of the South/Southeast interconnected Brazilian power system. The results show that the parametric approach is robust and efficient when applied to large-scale OPF problems.

TL;DR: The partial left ventriculectomy performed in elderly patients with cardiac insufficiency with severe hemodynamics disfunction resulted in 10% mortality, and promoted important recovery of the cardiac performance by: improvement of NYHA functional class, enhancement of the ejection fraction and left ventricular % systolic shortening; reduction of theleft ventricular syStolic and diastolic diameters and determining better ventricular volume/mass ratio.
Abstract: Background: Cardiac insufficiency is one of the most important problems challenging the public health resources in the modern world. The partial left ventriculectomy (Batista's Operation) is the most recent surgical treatment for the end-stage heart failure but, until now, without specific reports in the cardiovascular literature regarding its results in elderly patients. Objective: To study the results of the Batista's Operation in aged patients. Method: From May 1995 to December 1997, ten patients aged 62 to 78 years, suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy (class IV NYHA), were treated with the partial left ventriculectomy procedure in the Cardiothoracic Surgical Clinic of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of Mato Grosso do Sul Federal University ¾ (University Hospital Nucleus). Results: Nine (90%) patients were discharged from the hospital and one (10%) patient died in the 6th postoperative day from respiratory insufficiency. An elliptical resection was performed in the lateral wall of the left ventricle, from the apex to near the atrioventricular groove and between the papillary muscles. Dimensions of the removed fragment (mean values): 10.8+1.3 cm x 5.0+0.6 cm. The echocardiographic control has proved: FE = fractional shortening, EF = ejection fraction, LVSD = left ventricular end-systolic diameter, LVDD = left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, DVL = diastolic volume lowering and SVR = systolic volume rised. In the late follow up three patients were in NYHA class I, three patients in class II and one in class III. The actuarial survival rate were 100%,87%,87% and 67% for 6, 12, 24 and 36 months respectively. Conclusion: The partial left ventriculectomy performed in elderly patients with cardiac insufficiency with severe hemodynamics disfunction resulted in 10% mortality, promoted important recovery of the cardiac performance by: improvement of NYHA functional class, enhancement of the ejection fraction and left ventricular % systolic shortening; reduction of the left ventricular systolic and diastolic diameters and determining better ventricular volume/mass ratio.

Abstract: The influence of the method of storage of teeth and the effect of two kinds of dentin-bonding agents on the microleakage at the axial and cervical walls of composite restorations, in primary second molars, were evaluated. The samples were divided in three groups: Dehydrated, Hydrated and Frozen. The Dehydrated group was kept dry, the Hydrated group was stored in physiological saline solution under refrigeration, and the Frozen group was kept in the freezer, also immersed in physiological solution. The samples received two vertical slot preparations: a mesio-occlusal and a disto-occlusal one. In the mesio-occlusal cavities, Scotchbond Multi-Use adhesive system was used, whereas in the disto-occlusal cavities Prime & Bond 2.1 system was used, and all cavities were filled with Solitaire composite resin. The groups were then thermocycled and immersed in silver nitrate solution. Microleakage was measured by means of a digitized image system and the values were submitted to statistical analysis. The results showed that the method of storage had no statistically significant influence on marginal microleakage. Microleakage at the cervical wall was significantly greater than that at the axial wall, with 99,9% of certainty. The adhesive systems did not show significant influence on microleakage, in the studied methods of storage. However, there was statistical difference in the Dehydrated group samples, with the use of Prime & Bond 2.1 adhesive, when considering the margins of the restoration (axial and cervical).

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of particle radial transport on the electron cyclotron (EC) and lower hybrid (LH) power deposition profiles and current drive efficiency were investigated in a tokamak plasma under the combined action of LH waves, EC waves, collisions and spatial transport of electrons across the magnetic surfaces.
Abstract: In this paper, we study the effects of particle radial transport on the electron cyclotron (EC) and lower hybrid (LH) power deposition profiles and current drive efficiency. We consider a tokamak plasma under the combined action of LH waves, EC waves, collisions and spatial transport of electrons across the magnetic surfaces, and consider situations in which the spatial location of the peaks of power deposition profiles for EC and LH waves is not the same. Our results, found from numerical solution of the diffusion equation, indicate significant modification in the LH power deposition profile and show evidence of a non-local synergism between LH and EC waves when transport is present, leading to strong enhancing of RF current drive efficiency.
