TL;DR: The results show that SVR prediction models are of similar accuracy with multiple-regression models but are more robust regarding the metrics included in the data sets, and preliminary dimension reduction of the data set by principal component analysis generally benefits more to SVR than to multiple regression.
Abstract: Airborne laser scanning is nowadays widely used for the estimation of forest stand parameters. Prediction models have to deal with high-dimensional laser data sets as well as limited field calibration data. This problem is enhanced in mountainous areas where forest is highly heterogeneous and field data collection is costly. Artificial neural network models and support vector regression (SVR) have already demonstrated their ability to address such issues for species-specific plot volume prediction. In this letter, we compare the stand parameter prediction accuracies of support vector machines and ordinary least squares multiple-regression models for dominant height, basal area, mean diameter, and stem density. The sensitivity of these techniques to the input variables is investigated by testing data sets which include different numbers and types of laser metrics, and by reducing their dimension with principal component and independent component analyses. Whereas usual variables only reflect the vertical distribution, we also integrate the entropy of the horizontal distribution of the point cloud in the laser metrics. The results show that SVR prediction models are of similar accuracy with multiple-regression models but are more robust regarding the metrics included in the data sets. Preliminary dimension reduction of the data set by principal component analysis generally benefits more to SVR than to multiple regression. The optimal combination of laser metrics to be included in the data sets mainly depends on the forest parameter to be estimated.

TL;DR: In this paper, specific sol-gel formulations and protocols have been adapted to the fine patterning of TiO2 films using a simplified UVA three-step lithography method, which has been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ellipsometry.
Abstract: Specific sol–gel formulations and protocols have been adapted to the fine patterning of TiO2 films using a very simplified UVA three-step lithography method. Mechanisms occurring during the photo-patterning procedure and a post-patterning thermal treatment have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ellipsometry. Discussions are proposed to support the influence of the photo-patterning procedure and post-patterning treatment on the shape and the dimension of so-formed microstructures. Original additional functionalities arising from such structures are also presented.

TL;DR: To comply with the requirements set out in the C irdo project namely: respect privacy and preserve personal data, the processing tasks is performed through background tasks, without any human intrusion.
Abstract: C irdo project is intended to establish new healthcare systems to ensure the safety at home of seniors and people with decreasing independence. In particular, extending “e-lio footnote http://www.technosens.fr/ ” devise, C irdo aims to develop an audio/video-based system which makes it possible for elderly to live with a sufficient degree of autonomy. To achieve this goal, generic purposes on video analysis and audio processing are discussed and implemented in the same process. Audio and video analysis algorithms are launched simultaneously and thinks to GPU implementation, the tasks are done in real time. To comply with the requirements set out in the C irdo project namely: respect privacy and preserve personal data, the processing tasks is performed through background tasks, without any human intrusion. In order to have different types of fall for our experiences, multiple scenarios were designed and performed by several persons. Besides the technical aspect, the project also focuses on generic technology validation by potential users and their human environment (family, caregivers/care takers…). Psychological and ergonomic assessment on the use of services developed was conducted. It focused on the usefulness, usability and accessibility and acceptance of the tool. This evaluation was completed by critical investigation of knowledge acquired by professionals (geriatricians, caregivers school and associations).

19 Jun 1996TL;DR: This paper presents a distributed hardware/software cosimulation environment for heterogeneous systems prototyping applied to an industrial application, providing important benefits in hardware-software codesign: better design environment and reduced time to validate.
Abstract: This paper presents a distributed hardware/software cosimulation environment for heterogeneous systems prototyping applied to an industrial application. The environment provides following features: distributed Hw/Sw cosimulation, automatic Hw/Sw interface generation, Hw elements can be described at different levels of abstraction and generic/specific Sw debuggers can be used. Starting from a brief description of the interface of the interconnected modules the tool automatically produces the link between Hw and Sw parts. In addition, the environment is very easy to use, even for complex systems that may include several Sw (C) modules and several Hw (VHDL) modules running in parallel. Applied to a large industrial multi-processor system, this method appeared reliable and efficient, providing important benefits in hardware-software codesign: better design environment and reduced time to validate.
