TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a canister for an airbag inflator that includes a tubular body having a cylindrical shape elongated from a first end to a second end along a longitudinal central.
Abstract: A canister for an airbag inflator includes a tubular body having a cylindrical shape elongated from a first end to a second end along a longitudinal central The tubular body forms a continuous wall that defines a pressurized gas chamber at the first end and a diffuser at the second end. The continuous wall is spaced from the central axis by an approximately constant radial distance from the first end to the second end. The canister also includes a burst disk integrally formed with the body from a single piece of material (e.g., aluminum alloy). The burst disk is oriented transverse to the central axis to separate the pressurized gas chamber from the diffuser. The burst disk has a thickness less than that of the body wall. Because the burst disk and wall are formed of the same material according to these relative thicknesses, the burst disk will rupture before the structural integrity of the wall is compromised. A score pattern can be imprinted on the burst disk to facilitate uniform failure during activation of the inflator.

TL;DR: In this article, a novel aluminum alloy contains vanadium as an alloying element, at a concentration ranging from 0.02% to about 0.4% by weight, and vanadium imparts corrosion resistance to the alloy, particularly when used as a core alloy in a vacuum brazing sheet.
Abstract: A novel aluminum alloy contains vanadium as an alloying element, at a concentration ranging from about 0.02% to about 0.4% by weight. The vanadium imparts corrosion resistance to the alloy, particularly when the alloy is used as a core alloy in a vacuum brazing sheet. A further improvement in corrosion resistance is achieved by processing the alloy or brazing sheet in such a manner that the final processing step is a cold work to a reduction of about 10% to about 20%.

TL;DR: In this paper, the pyrolysis characteristics and coke microstructure of a large variety of electrode binders have been examined using a variety of techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis with simultaneous differential thermal analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis.
Abstract: The pyrolysis characteristics and coke microstructure of a large variety of electrode binders have been examined. Examination techniques included (1) thermogravimetric analysis with simultaneous differential thermal analysis, (2) optical and scanning electron microscopy, (3) proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, and (4) bondcoke strength measurements. Coaltar pitches exhibited more uniformity in pyrolytic behavior than the petroleum pitches studied. Petroleum binder quality varied widely from unacceptable to essentially equal that for coaltar pitch. While early stages of pyrolysis are basically endothermic for all binders, the later stages involve several exotherms related to the carbon polymerization process. In particular, exotherms at about 430°C and 470°C were repeatedly observed, both singly and together, which appeared to be related to binder aromaticity and degree of condensation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the size effects in the K I c test by testing duplicate compact specimens in ten different combinations of five thicknesses and five widths and found that the entire set of data could be represented by a single linear equation of the form, R = R o + ρΔa.
Abstract: Size effects in the K I c test were investigated by testing duplicate compact specimens in ten different combinations of five thicknesses and five widths. Curves of crack resistance as a function of crack extension were calculated in terms of strain energy release rate, G, rather than stress intensity factor, K. It was found that the entire set of data could be represented by a single linear equation of the form, R = R o + ρΔa. The coefficient, p, was found to be an inverse function of specimen thickness. When this family of R-curves is compared with the driving force, G, curves for the various specimen sizes, it can be seen that the ratio of maximum load to the measuring point load (P m a x /P Q ) in the record of a plane strain toughness test, depends primarily on the width/thickness ratio of the specimen. This ratio appears to bear no relation to the contribution of crack tip plasticity to the apparent crack extension at the measuring point. Accordingly, inclusion of a maximum value of this ratio in the validity requirements of ASTM Method E 399 for the purpose of restricting such a contribution is questioned.
