27 Jul 1976TL;DR: In this article, the formation of a hydrophobic and usually oleophilic coating on an aluminum surface by mechanically deforming or upsetting the aluminum surface to disrupt the natural oxide coating in the presence of alkaline agents and other equivalent long chain aliphatic carboxylate compounds was discussed.
Abstract: This invention relates to the formation of a hydrophobic and usually oleophilic coating on an aluminum surface by mechanically deforming or upsetting the aluminum surface to disrupt the natural oxide coating in the presence of alkaline agents and a long chain aliphatic carboxylic acid or other equivalent long chain aliphatic carboxylate compounds. Preferably, the carboxylic acid and alkaline agent are incorporated into a metal-working lubricant which is maintained on the aluminum surface during fabrication, such as rolling, so that the hydrophobic coating is formed simultaneously with fabrication and thereby avoid the necessity of a separate coating operation.

30 Apr 1971TL;DR: In this article, an improved method for protecting ferrous pipe from corrosion is presented, which comprises affixing in intimate contact with said pipe a length of magnesium tubing, having sacrificial anode properties.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved method for protecting ferrous pipe from corrosion and comprises affixing in intimate contact with said pipe a length of magnesium tubing. The magnesium tubing, having sacrificial anode properties, is slipped over a length of ferrous pipe while at an elevated temperature. The tubing is then compressed by external pressure until it is in intimate contact with the ferrous pipe throughout its length and it is allowed to cool in place.

26 Oct 1978TL;DR: In this article, an improved mold bore configuration for a DC casting mold is presented, where the feed end of the mold bore is provided with a chill section having an inner surface which tapers outwardly in the direction of the discharge end.
Abstract: This invention is directed to an improved mold bore configuration for a DC casting mold wherein the feed end of the mold bore is provided with a chill section having an inner surface which tapers outwardly in the direction of the discharge end of the mold. The tapered, diverging inner surfaces intersect the surfaces of the straight walled, shape determinative chilled section of the mold bore at an obtuse angle greater than 135°. Faster casting speeds can be used and improved billet and ingot surfaces result.

20 Dec 1971TL;DR: In this paper, a container forming press comprised of a combined punch, drawing die, and stripper means for effecting the formation and ejection of a container from the press during a full cycling of the same.
Abstract: Container forming press comprised of a combined punch, drawing die, and stripper means for effecting the formation of and ejection of a container from the press during a full cycling of the same. The press further includes an improved electrofluidic control system connected to the punch and drawing die means which operates to detect malformed containers and to stop the apparatus so that the malformed containers can be removed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the ΔG° data for the formation of bayerite, boehmite, and diaspore were derived from the standard free energies of the aluminations, α-Al2O3 and AlF3.
Abstract: Consistent standard free energies of formation of gibbsite, bayerite, boehmite, and diaspore; their respective transition aluminas, α-Al2O3; and AlF3, AlCl3, H2O3 HF, and HCl are compiled from 298.16 to 2100 K from literature review, computations, and estimates. Significant adjustments and additions to earlier compilations are included. Revised analysis is made of the gibbsite-to-α-A12O3 transition series and of reactions of appropriate aluminas with HF and HCl, comparing them with experimental data. These updated ΔG° tables should also yield accurate ΔG° data for many other alumina reactions, e.g. with SiO2, M2O, MO, etc.
