TL;DR: In this paper, a d-q model-based unified power flow controller (UPFC) is developed with proportional-integral (PI) and PID controller and their performance is analyzed.
Abstract: Reactive power compensation is a main problem in the control of electric power system. Reactive power from the source increases the transmission losses and reduces the power transmission ability of the transmission lines. In addition, reactive power must not be transmitted throughout the transmission line to a longer distance. Consequently, flexible ac transmission systems devices such as static compensator unified power-flow controller (UPFC) and static volt-ampere compensator are used to ease these harms. UPFC is the mainly adaptable and composite power electronic equipment that has emerged as the vital equipment for the control and optimisation of power flow in electrical power transmission system. In this study, a d–q model-based UPFC is developed with proportional-integral (PI) and PID controller. The above controllers are simulated using MATLAB and their performance is analysed. Outcome of the analysis shows the superiority of PID control over the PI control method. Also this study presents comparative evaluation (both controllers) of dynamic response when initial and final load disturbances.

TL;DR: In this article, the load flow analysis is performed by using conventional Newton Raphson technique and MATLAB coding is developed for simulation to find the best optimal location of FACTS controllers by using metaheuristic algorithm called Genetic Algorithm.
Abstract: Over the last two decades, voltage instability problem in power systems have become one of the most important concerns in the power industry. Recently, several network blackouts have been related to voltage collapse. The introduction of emerging Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) technology improves the Stability, reduces the losses and also reduces the cost of generation. FACTS controllers are used to control the voltage, current, impedance, phase angle and to damp the oscillations. Placing FACTS devices like SVC, TCSC, etc., in a suitable location will help to maintain bus voltages at a desired level and also to improve the Voltage Stability margins. This paper presents an effective method which is used to find the best optimal location of FACTS controllers by using metaheuristic algorithm called Genetic Algorithm. In this paper, the load flow analysis is performed by using conventional Newton Raphson technique. Different loading conditions are considered and MATLAB coding is developed for simulation.
