Dynamics of soil carbon following destruction of tropical rainforest and the subsequent establishment of Imperata grassland in Indonesian Borneo using stable carbon isotopes

Abstract: Southeast Asia has the highest rate of tropical rainforest deforestation worldwide, and large deforested areas have been replaced ultimately by the highly invasive grass Imperata cylindrica. However, information on the carbon (C) budget with such land transition is very scarce. This study presents the dynamics of soil C following rainforest destruction and the subsequent establishment of Imperata grassland in the lowland humid tropics of Indonesian Borneo using stable C isotopes. To evaluate the relative contribution of organic matter originating from primary forest (C3) and grasslands (C4), we compared soil C stock and natural 13C abundance from six sites to a depth of 100 cm using samples with a wide range of soil textures. Twelve years after the first soil sampling in the grasslands, we re-sampled to examine temporal changes in soil organic matter. The grassland topsoil (0–5 cm) is an active layer with rapid decomposition and incorporation of fresh C (mean residence time: 7.5 year) and a substantial proportion of the stable C pool (37%). The decline in forest-derived C was slight, even at 5–10 cm depths, and subsoil (20–100 cm depth) forest-derived C did not change along the forest-to-grassland chronosequence. Grassland-derived C stock increased significantly in the subsurface and subsoils (5–100 cm). Simulation indicated that total soil C stock (0–100 cm) increased by 18.6 Mg ha−1 from initial primary forest (58.0 Mg ha−1) to a new equilibrium state of the grassland (76.6 Mg ha−1) after 30–50 years of grassland establishment. This research indicates that the soil did not function as a CO2 source when the deforested area was replaced by Imperata grassland on the Ultisols of the Asian humid tropics. Instead, increased soil C stocks offset CO2 emissions, with the C offset accounting for 6.6–7.4% of the loss of biomass C stock.

Decision support system for new employee recruitment using weighted product method

Abstract: Companies need new employees that are expected to meet the assessment of each criteria. The criteria set by the company is expected to become a quality standard for the employee's own personal progress. One of the problems in the recruitment of new employees is the problem of subjectivity in the decision for the determination of a new employee candidates. The research objective is to facilitate decision-making on issues related to making decision of new employees recruitment. Processing of data on research using Weighted Product methods with the concept of multiplication to connect rating attributes which should be raised to advance with the relevant weights. The criteria used in the research of new employees recruitment taken in general that is flexible in the sense that can be added or the opposite of education, GPA, work experience, interview and test basic skills. Results of the research is a decision support system application web-based recruitment of new employees who provide information to the last of the top-ranked candidate new employees as consideration for taking the right decision and is expected to simplify the process of decision the best.

Kebijakan Pengembangan Peternakan Sapi Potong di Indonesia

Abstract: Berbagai upaya telah dilakukan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas, produksi maupun populasi sapi potong dalam rangka mendukung program kecukupan daging (PKD) 2010, yang direvisi menjadi 2014. Produksi daging dalam negeri diharapkan mampu memenuhi 9095% kebutuhan daging nasional. Karena itu, pengembangan sapi potong perlu dilakukan melalui pendekatan usaha yang berkelanjutan, didukung dengan industri pakan yang mengoptimalkan pemanfaatan bahan pakan lokal spesifik lokasi melalui pola yang terintegrasi. Hingga kini, upaya pengembangan sapi potong belum mampu memenuhi kebutuhan daging dalam negeri, selain rentan terhadap serangan penyakit. Hal ini dapat disebabkan oleh berbagai kelemahan dalam sistem pengembangan peternakan. Oleh karena itu, perlu diupayakan model pengembangan dan kelembagaan yang tepat berbasis masyarakat dan secara ekonomi menguntungkan. Pemerintah sebaiknya menyerahkan pengembangan peternakan ke depan kepada masyarakat melalui mekanisme pasar bebas. Pemerintah lebih berperan dalam pelayanan dan membangun kawasan untuk memecahkan permasalahan dasar dalam pengembangan peternakan sehingga dapat mengaktifkan mekanisme pasar. Usaha peternakan hendaknya dapat memacu perkembangan agroindustri sehingga membuka kesempatan kerja dan usaha. Implikasi kebijakan dari gagasan ini adalah perlu dibuat peta jalan pembangunan peternakan nasional dan diuraikan secara rinci di setiap wilayah pengembangan ternak.
