TL;DR: In this article, the authors find that independent directors who are ranked higher are more likely to vote against the management, especially on financial reporting issues, and that higher independent-director rankings are associated with less earnings management.
Abstract: While US companies mainly list their board of directors alphabetically, this is not the case for Chinese companies, most of which list their independent directors last. We interpret the listing order of Chinese directors as board hierarchy, reflecting power allocation within the board. Based on extant evidence that independent directors contribute to firm value and that empowered individuals have more influence in group decision making, we expect independent-director rankings to be positively associated with firm value and find evidence consistent with this prediction. In our supplementary analyses we explore the mechanisms through which empowered independent directors enhance firm value. We find that independent directors who are ranked higher are more likely to vote against the management, especially on financial reporting issues. Further, higher independent-director rankings are associated with less earnings management. Our study suggests that empowering independent directors increases firm value.

TL;DR: This paper argues that search results should be diversified in a multi-dimensional way, as queries are usually ambiguous at different levels and dimensions, and proposes a general framework that explicitly diversifies search results based on multiple dimensions of subtopics.
Abstract: Most existing search result diversification algorithms diversify search results in terms of a specific dimension. In this paper, we argue that search results should be diversified in a multi-dimensional way, as queries are usually ambiguous at different levels and dimensions. We first explore mining subtopics from four types of data sources, including anchor texts, query logs, search result clusters, and web sites. Then we propose a general framework that explicitly diversifies search results based on multiple dimensions of subtopics. It balances the relevance of documents with respect to the query and the novelty of documents by measuring the coverage of subtopics. Experimental results on the TREC 2009 Web track dataset indicate that combining multiple types of subtopics do help better understand user intents. By incorporating multiple types of subtopics, our models improve the diversity of search results over the sole use of one of them, and outperform two state-of-the-art models.

TL;DR: A movie recommendation framework based on a hybrid recommendation model and sentiment analysis on Spark platform is proposed to improve the accuracy and timeliness of mobile movie recommender system.
Abstract: Movie recommendation in mobile environment is critically important for mobile users. It carries out comprehensive aggregation of user’s preferences, reviews, and emotions to help them find suitable movies conveniently. However, it requires both accuracy and timeliness. In this paper, a movie recommendation framework based on a hybrid recommendation model and sentiment analysis on Spark platform is proposed to improve the accuracy and timeliness of mobile movie recommender system. In the proposed approach, we first use a hybrid recommendation method to generate a preliminary recommendation list. Then sentiment analysis is employed to optimize the list. Finally, the hybrid recommender system with sentiment analysis is implemented on Spark platform. The hybrid recommendation model with sentiment analysis outperforms the traditional models in terms of various evaluation criteria. Our proposed method makes it convenient and fast for users to obtain useful movie suggestions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine whistleblowing intentions among lower-tier employees, specifically examining whether an externally-administered reporting channel increases whistleblowing intention compared to an internally administered one and find that whistle-blowing intentions are higher when the reporting channel is administered externally than when it is administered internally.
Abstract: It has been suggested that a reporting channel administered by a third-party may represent a stronger procedural safeguard of anonymity and avoids the appearance of impropriety. This study examines whistleblowing intentions among lower-tier employees, specifically examines whether an externally-administered reporting channel increases whistleblowing intentions compared to an internally-administered one. In contrast to the findings of an earlier study by Kaplan et al. (Audit J Pract Theory 28(2):273–288, 2009), our results suggest that whistle-blowing intentions are higher when the reporting channel is administered externally than when it is administered internally. We also find that an externally-administered reporting channel mitigates the negative effect of bystanders on whistleblowing intentions. Implications are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, structural, physical properties and electronic structure of van der Waals (vdW) crystal VI3 have been reported, showing that VI3 exhibits a structural transition from monoclinic C2/m to rhombohedral R-3 at Ts ~ 79 K, similar to CrX3.
Abstract: We report structural, physical properties and electronic structure of van der Waals (vdW) crystal VI3. Detailed analysis reveals that VI3 exhibits a structural transition from monoclinic C2/m to rhombohedral R-3 at Ts ~ 79 K, similar to CrX3 (X = Cl, Br, I). Below Ts, a long-range ferromagnetic (FM) transition emerges at Tc ~ 50 K. The local moment of V in VI3 is close to the high-spin state V3+ ion (S = 1). Theoretical calculation suggests that VI3 may be a Mott insulator with the band gap of about 0.84 eV. In addition, VI3 has a relative small interlayer binding energy and can be exfoliated easily down to few layers experimentally. Therefore, VI3 is a candidate of two-dimensional FM semiconductor. It also provides a novel platform to explore 2D magnetism and vdW heterostructures in S = 1 system.
