TL;DR: Roles are proposed for the previously implicated glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor and its receptor as well as for laminin 1 and α6β1 integrin in pronephric duct guidance.
Abstract: The epidermis overlying the migrating axolotl pronephric duct is known to participate in duct guidance. This epidermis deposits an extracellular matrix onto the migrating duct and its pathway that is a potential source of directional guidance cues. The role of this matrix in pronephric duct guidance was assayed by presenting matrix deposited on microcarriers directly to migrating pronephric ducts in situ. We found that reorientation of extracellular-matrix-bearing carriers prior to their presentation to migrating ducts caused a corresponding reorientation of pronephric duct migration. Subepidermal microinjection of function-blocking antibodies against α6 integrin, β1 integrin or the laminin-1/E8 domain recognized byα 6β1 integrin, all of which were detected and localized here, inhibited pronephric duct migration. Moreover, pre-exposure to anti-laminin-1/E8 function-blocking antibody prevented reoriented carriers of epidermally deposited matrix from reorienting pronephric duct migration. These results are incorporated into an integrated model of pronephric duct guidance consistent with all present evidence, proposing roles for the previously implicated glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor and its receptor as well as for laminin 1 and α6β1 integrin.

TL;DR: In this paper, the applicability of the Gaps model to the smaller service firm is examined and it is shown that the resources and structure of smaller firms significantly affect the types of service quality gaps that occur and the closure measures.
Abstract: Delivering quality is as critical to survival of small service firms as it is to large corporations. Zeithaml, Parasuraman, and Berry (1990) developed a conceptual model of service quality (Gaps) that identified gaps in service quality and suggested measures to close them. The Gaps model has been used in large service corporations, but is yet to be applied to small service firms. Therefore, this paper examines the applicability of the Gaps model to the smaller service firm. Our analysis revealed that the resources and structure of smaller firms significantly affect the types of service quality gaps that occur and the closure measures.

09 Nov 2018TL;DR: How the planarian’s distinctive biology enables an examination of biobehavioral interaction models, and what behavior scientists must consider if they are to advance behavioral research with this organism are discussed.
Abstract: This article serves as a brief primer on planaria for behavior scientists. In the 1950s and 1960s, McConnell's planarian laboratory posited that conditioned behavior could transfer after regeneration, and through cannibalization of trained planaria. These studies, the responses, and replications have been collectively referred to as the "planarian controversy." Successful behavioral assays still require refinement with this organism, but they could add valuable insight into our conceptualization of memory and learning. We discuss how the planarian's distinctive biology enables an examination of biobehavioral interaction models, and what behavior scientists must consider if they are to advance behavioral research with this organism. Suggestions for academics interested in building planaria learning laboratories are offered.

TL;DR: The selective persistence of the B‐1 B‐cell subset in the peritoneal cavity of aging SCID mice is a natural model for the study of those genetic and environmental influences that determine lymphocyte longevity.
Abstract: The impact of increasing age upon immunoglobulin production and B-lymphocyte generation in "leaky" severe combined immune-defective (SCID) mice was examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and flow cytometry. By 1 year of age, the mice had normal numbers of B cells in their peritoneal cavity, while their spleen had very few immunoglobulin M-positive (IgM+) cells. The majority of B cells expressed the CD11b marker characteristic of the B-1b subset. B-1a (CD5+) cells were present at a lower frequency and B-2 cells were absent. The frequency of mice producing detectable immunoglobulin increased with age, and isotype diversity within individual mice was variable. IgM production was most frequently observed followed by IgG3 and IgG2a, then IgG1, and finally IgA. The selective persistence of the B-1 B-cell subset in the peritoneal cavity of aging SCID mice is a natural model for the study of those genetic and environmental influences that determine lymphocyte longevity.

TL;DR: This paper examined the role that gender plays in a microenterprise program (MEP) that focused on developing quality business plans and found that women scored significantly better on the presentation of their plan to judges.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper proposes to examine the role that gender plays in a microenterprise program (MEP) that focused on developing quality business plans.Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected over four years from 1,013 participants in a microenterprise business development program. Empirical evidence is presented on the outcomes of the program.Findings – Women and men had similar program completion rates and similar overall business plan scores. However, women scored significantly better on the presentation of their plan to judges. The level of formal education a participant had upon entering the program mattered, but only for women.Research limitations/implications – Further research could determine whether the type of formal education made a difference in producing higher scoring plans (liberal arts, business, etc.) or is it the process of formal learning that matters? Startups and existing firms, segmentation of firm type (retail, service, etc.) should be researched in conjunction with gende...
